    Artificial corks were actually designed for slower maturing wines I thought. Natural cork can rot and produce fungus over time.

    I drank a rioja that was older than me last month. Cork was sound.

    Experts would never check corks if they never failed. That's why the waiter shows you the cork at the table. You're supposed to verify it's integrity before tasting or smelling it.
