i didn't read all of this, but condolences, dinky.
raf, i bought a pb in the states in december, knowing that i'd be bringing it back to the uk.
it depends on what you're going to buy, really. the rule is that if it can run without being plugged in, it's covered globally.
so as long as you're not buying desktop machines, you should be fine with apple care.
of course, i haven't had to use mine at all.

although i did sit on my pb the other night while rather stoned and sat there looking around my desk area for the damn computer. it doesn't seem to have harmed it, though.
