As much as some might want to just say "the book is fiction, deal with it" - the book opens with the word "FACT" and blurs the line between fiction and non-fiction.
It is not simply the case of a fantasy narrative demarcated from the real world like say... Lord of The Rings is. In that case, it is not "just fiction". I would argue that the way Brown wraps his narrative in "fact" is a sneaky way of putting forward an argument he believes is true, while allowing himself to distance himself from the ideas when convinient.
People aren't stupid, they are deceived by the blurr.
