Placing a bid with priceline is basically buying a ticket - once you do it you're agreeing to pay when they find one at a price you selected. If they can't find one for the price you selected then you don't have to pay.
I'm not sure but if you find a cheaper price then they do and can prove it, they may match the price.
I never used priceline but have friends that have. It all sounds a little scarey to me. I'd pay and extra $50 just for peace of mind in knowing what I got.
