This point has been touched upon here but I think some clients who are not web marketing saavy hold to this myth that if they create a website with "SEO" (and I use quotes b/c its a buzz word that alot of people don't understand) then they will magically generate all these new clients.
As designers I think it is our job to educate our clients in this realm too. If your business plan does not have an effective marketing strategy (which incorporates web, print, etc.) then you might as well be building the worlds best product in your windowless basement. It's bad business sense.
