I swear that this is a tradition somewhere. I remember watching something like a PBS special where after a child is born there ARE things called "After Parties". The families will gather for a after birth celebration (seems standard) where they will cook up the placenta and eat it together. I think the special even had them mixing into some kinda rice concoction. Its supposed to bring "good luck and strong family ties"
