While the flat version is decent (look to the favourite icon), the larger, dimensional version is terrible at best. What makes this so bad is that it simply continues with the recent trend in the attempts to give 'depth' to a business simply by running a 3D filter over it.
Volvo, UPS, Chevron and countless others have moved in this direction, in a vain attempt to look contemporary, when they only end up looking like OS icons. Very few of these actually create a lasting image for the company, and fewer will outlast a logo life cycle.
The question we really have to ask is whether we as designers are creating identities for the short or the long term? If Quark is trying to make themselves different, and an actual player in the graphics software world, then why are they releasing a logo that is dead on arrival, and will only hurt them in the long run?
