I've had cockatiels for years. Don't get a parrot unless you are sure you can commit to it the rest of your life. I've seen some really sad cases with African Greys who are abandoned by self absorbed idiots who buy them for the novelty of having an exotic creature.
Parrots (especially African Greys) are really smart, they are like children and like any intelligent animal (have the intelligence of a 6 year old I've heard), they need alot of socialization and attention. They get really attached to their owners and can go crazy if not treated right or abandoned.
Get a fish.
