I can't believe no one has mentioned Hamilton? Dude, if you're looking for a hub of metropolitan activity then Hamilton is your only choice.
But, seriously, no, forget Hamilton. Toronto is what you want. I've lived in Montreal and it's a much cooler city. Very relaxed and down-to-earth.
I disagree that there's more of a fashion industry in Montreal though. Really, the vast majority is in Toronto.
Plus, Toronto is also where it's at for design work as well.
Montreal is the cheapest city to live in but working there could be a trick if you don't speak french. Not impossible, but it certainly helps to be bilingual.
Vancouver has a laid-back hippy lifestyle but it's more expensive than Toronto and has less work.
As for design communities . . . well, mostly it's a rag-tag bunch that gets drunk and goes to strip bars but I think your best bet would be to hook up with the people on here from Toronto.
There is Flash in TO (the Flash In The Can people) and a bunch of User Groups but I never go to any of those. It's like paying someone to go to work after hours. But they could help find a job.
