AE and sound? Have fun with that. I don't know how everyone else does it, but I usually open up the sounds I want to synch up in Audition, then take note of the time codes, and try to synch them up in AE according to that. I'm not aware of any way to actually hear the sound as you work/press space bar. You can always try to look at the waveform as suggested.
Another thing I do is just export without sound and add the sound in Audition/Cubase/whatever sound program you like to use later.
It's just one of those stupid things that they forgot or something apparently. Like being able to add video and sound to a layered menu in DVD Studio Pro. But that's another story... ok, end of rant.
