Some of his success must also be related to having skills that don't neccessarily involve adobe software.
...like motivation and the power of persuasion. Not too mention being savvy with self-promotion.
Then you have to look at BMW's angle. They just reached thousands of people (designers) who checked out a BMW if only for the name recognition of JD.
All in all, everyone probably got their money's worth.
