Evin, Sydney is great. Never been to NY but can't imagine Syd being anywhere near as full-on. Degree's are useless, good design and proof of it are what you need. If you have a good reel or portfolio you'll be fine. As previous posted, Ausinfront is where to find work. Good thing about it is you circumvent those painful job agencies. Send me your stuff I'll see if I can give you work.
Word of warning too, sydney will make you a lazy, work for the weekend and holidays totally relaxed designer, but that's why we're all here.
