I assume you're creating the file at 300dpi.
If the banner/poster is that big you won't need to work at 300dpi as no-one will be able to look at the whole thing at once anyway – and I'm assuming they won't need to get up close to it. 150 or even 100dpi will probably be fine. You forget that while it's important for a book to look perfect whilst readig up close, poster's are never that high-res, your eye fills in the image.
In fact if you wanted to look at a billboard image from a mile away a 300dpi image would be no good. You'd never see it. You would need a really big screen effect on it for it to be legible.
I had a friend who did a tube ad, they asked for it about A1 size, then they just blew it up.
