Sits up are good, crunches are under-rated I think, and have been more effective in flattening my stomach than the situps.
I walked past a gym shop one day and saw one of those incline situp benches for $55, grabbed it, and it's great. The situps on it were good, but screwed with my lower back, so i started doing crunches, and the improvements were immediate.
Getting rid of that last layer of fat to really expose the abs, like the other guys have said, is just cardio cardio cardio.
