My oldest is 8. It is an incredible age. They can think for themselves, yet they soooo depend on you for guidance.
My few tips:
They want to be involved, so give 'em simple taks to complete.
Listen to them, no really listen.
Be their parent, not their friend.
They crave boundries.
They also enjoy simple routines.
Take 'em fishing.
It must be the spirit of the season but this is the third adoption of folks I know in as many months.
