    well everywhere in NYC is expensive but Manhattan is outrageous.

    minimum for a studio in Manhattan is about 1500.
    Brooklyn is cheaper- Bushwick, Williamsburg, Prospect Heights, Red Hook-- more expensive areas in Brooklyn are Brooklyn Heights, Carroll Gardens, Park Slope- but studios in these areas still start at $900-1100
    and there's also Queens- I don't really know Queens , you can ask e-pill for that

    you can also try upper Manhattan above 100th st
    Harlem, Spanish Harlem, Washington Heights-Inwood is nice and cheap - that's up at 200th st
    Inwood you can get a 2bdr for $1500
