not to stick up for this thing. i find it more than slightly strange myself.
But, i believe the emphasis of the verse below is on the not bowing down and serving the thing (as far as I know people aren't doing this). The verse is also prohibiting the creation of an idol. I don't think this qualifies. The statue points attention to Jesus, who is the attention of worship.
However there are some strict conservative protestants out there would agree with you there dobs. They protest the making of any images of Jesus or the even the cross. So, you are not alone in your interpretation mr. dobs. I just never knew you were so conservative.
