usability! simplicity! content!
a person judges whether or not they are going to 'stick around' on a website within the first 10 seconds or so of the page opening.
if they cant work out the navigation and the page isnt clearly structured and it doesnt look as if there is anything that interests them on the homepage, then chances are they wont delve any deeper into the site (even though there might be loads in there that may interest them).
I wrote a bit about Usability for DesignIsKinky about 4 years agoooo....
