Rosa Parks deserves everybody's respect and admiration, but she didn't start the civil rights movement. It may be convenient in a sound byte to declare that she did, but don't forget all the other black leaders prior to 1955. WEB Dubois, Langston Hughes, Ralph Ellison, Richard Wright, Booker T Washington, Zora Neel Hurston and countless others who advanced the cause of black pride and liberty in the decades before the movement really took hold. This shouldn't diminish Rosa Park's place in history--what she did took guts few of us could ever imagine, but it should be noted to put things into perspective.
