I'm going to guess that the woman on the bus "shut thier mouths" because your rant may have frightened them. It's hot out, maybe profuse sweating mixed with irrational throught set off a silent alarm that said "keep quiet and he wont stalk / hurt you".
But anyway, you can't quantify a substance by the amount, ie. it's comparing apples to oranges. You have to look at these things as servings. A tank of gas is one serving just like a cup of coffee is one serving. A full gas tank as a serving is beging to swell in price beyond the means of people. As a serving, a tank of fuel is expensive. There arent many other things that you buy a serving of so often that are that expensive. Unless you have a coke habit that finds you buying a 8 ball every couple of days, gas if probably the most expensive product per serving that you consume on a regular basis.
