I have done this with a series of png images in Flash.
You'll need a decent machine and lots of patience to author the Flash. The results are worth it.
I suggest exporting the png series as a seperate swf and loading it into your main stage, and treating it as if it were any other flash video by importing it at runtime.
The line of png's is simply to intensive to start doing tweens and scripts in the same swf.
