I post this knowing full well that Canon owns a good chunk of my soul (Adobe has the rest):
Having shot both brads as film cameras, I'm still preferential to the Canons-- Nikkor lenses are very nice, and the fact that they kept the same mount when switching to AF was a nice touch, but EF lenses are nice too.
If it were me, I would get the 20D-- it's a fairly robust body (magnesium alloy), and the harware inside is slightly better (sensors, etc.).
If I were you, though, I'd buy the body and shop around for a separate lens:
http://www.photo.net has never steered me wrong yet.
Just keep one thing in mind:
with either of these cameras, your focal length is different than that on a film camera (the ratio's about1:1.6, I think).
Unless you desperately need a zoom or a wide angle lens, either the EF50 1.8, or the EF85 1.8 are both good standard lenses.Oh, and the D70 doesn't have an available vertical grip-- not a big deal to most, I know, but Nikon's poor (or non-existant) design of grips is somehting that steered me to Canon so many years ago.
