make sure you have boots up to the task... eg: sneakers and a two day pack make for an easily sprained ankle.

don't buy new boots and go for a 2 day hike without breaking them in at least a LITTLE (eg, wear them all week, just walking around and stuff.

bring moleskin for blisters... wear a thin inner sock and a hiking sock over that...

all of this because: having your feet blistered and sore halfway thru your hike SUCKS!

you can cut down on clothes by not bringing a change... just make sure they're gonna dry out quick if you get wet somehow: eg: fleeces, microfibres, nylon etc.

water purifyer is a good idea... but they cost quite a bit, get some iodine pills... they work well and cost very litte, plus they save space.

a knife is very handy...better yet a letherman tool.

most people have mentioned the other stuff...

    take care of your feet!

cut down on weight by substituting beer for bacardi 151 or everclear.

better yet, huff your camping fuel! white gass will get you TRASHED!

    =P
