I been through this process several times, I'm from argentina, and I been working in SD for around 5 years now.
I came here on a J1 visa, and now I'm waiting on a H1B1. There are several visas you need to check with one you can apply for.
basically You need to get hired by a company before entering the states.
And they have to sign the papers for you to be considered to be able to work.
It's been a pain in the ass for me. good luck!
