happened to my mother too when she was a kid. i guess they were standing on the front stoop of their farmhouse and their dad (my grandpa) came running in from the field. she said as he grabbed her over his shoulder she could see a twister coming. grandma threw some palm leaves into the stove and they ran for the cellar.
the tornado jumped their house, landed a half mile on the other side and wiped out a few farms.
their home wasn't touched.
strange thing hearing that story from my mother the next day while we were helping the neighbor clean up, especially when she told me before she ran downstairs she threw a palm leaf on top of the pilot light in the stove.
