$1 less then the client is willing to pay -- that's the idea.
I charge per hour, but then i see the face on the client's face. Still i'm cheap so when i see the face i don't feel guilty asking for every penny i deserve.
Usually it's good to estimate more or less how many hours the project will take - quote that stating that if it will take longer you will thel it to the client - then when you are close to go over the hours tell the client that you might go over X amount. If he'she says yes you are cool, if not, then take the money you are owned and fold.
