My daughter has a dwarf hamster... very cute and so soft, easy to take care of (because kids don't actually follow through on that "I'll take care if it... I promise")

Stupid as a board though... dumb dumb dumb... they will walk right off your hand and break their necks if you're not careful, and can be furry staplers if you ask me, even the friendliest ones don't like being surprized.

We have rats as well... if you are looking for a smart robust rodent, this is the one for you. You can train them to do things, go in a litter box, come when you call (you just need a little persistence). Child friendly, and no trying to escape ... they will even give "kisses" ... if you're into that kind of thing.

Chinchillas are a no no... they are like ENORMOUS hamsters: craz, not social, nocturnal and always trying to escape... then trying to catch them is hell. My friend had one (he got rid of it) but before he did it managed to elude him for a couple of weeks and chew all of his cords... freaked me out too... it would hide and then run/hop(?) across the apartment at top speed.
