Pro's : small, quiet, easy to take care of (dispenceable food and water reserves so you can leave it for a few days on its own).
Cons: Smell... have to change the mulch in the cage quite often and cleaning it isn't much fun. They soak the woodchips with sweet smelling urine and pellets. Sometimes they squeek for long periods of time. So if its in a room where your trying to sleep this could prove to be annoying.
All in all a hamster can be a fun pet, it also depends f your lucky enough to get a cool one. Some of them are actually very friendly and will play with you, others will run from and bite you (they have two sharp front teeth that WILL puncture your skin if they get pissed).
Having sad that , I've have good experiences. I used to put it in rc cars and drive it around which was a lot of fun, and he seemed to like it al well.
For a very small kid it makes a good first pet to teach them how to care for an animal, before moving on to a dog.
