I decided a couple of months ago that I want to buy an analog camera with a 50mm lens to shoot some concert photos of friends, my daughter playing, like everyday pictures and some traveling.
I was totally convinced about buying the Canon AE1 and even saw a couple between 100 (just a camera with one lens) and 150 bucks (from camera with one lens to three lenses and a bag).
Then I read about the Canon AE1 Program and its dial, ISO selector and viewfinder. Okay, I guess that's worth it.
But then I was like, wait, lets check what Nikon has that's comparable.
And now I'm a bit divided in actually buiyng either a:
Nikon FE or Nikon FE2 (second hand 250 bucks!!!)
There are other interesting options like the Nikon F2 or FM.
I would even consider buying a Nikon FG for 50 bucks. So now I decided to reduce my budget and not fall into the trend prices and just buy a camera with a 50mm lens for 75 to 100 bucks max.
Can someone give me some advice on these cameras?
- Buyy a old Canon EOS 1.
I got two, fun to shoot analog.
https://global.canon…tank02 - I have a lot of old analog ones, and al the manual stuff is a drag, the EOS 1 is good palet cleanser after working with a Hassie 500 or a Fuji GW690iiitank02
- This is my most fun medium format camera:
Fujifilm GA645tank02 - Pentax K1000ok_not_ok
- Nikon FG is all you need and the size is amazing. Very reliable. Only drawback is that the power “switch” can be accidentally clicked on.nb
- If you get a Nikon, get an ai or ais lens. Do NOT get an Eseries lens.nb
- Best designed SLR camera of this era is the Olympus OM-2 or OM-2n. There are many great cameras, but this one is the best.nb
- If you have large hands and don’t mind a big clunker, the Pentax K1000 or Spotmatic with an SMC lens are fantastic and cheaper.nb
- https://casualphotop…nb
- thank you all for your input! I'm really not very into the K1000 though despite being more than okay. From Pentax I would prefer a ME.oey_oey
- But if I find a K1000 for 50€ I'll buy it.oey_oey
- K1000 was the first camera my mom gave me, it's a learner. Seconding the OM system. I have an OM2 and OM4. IMHO the OM4 is the best 35mm SLR ever.garbage
- They're getting cheaper. I have those bodies and library of lenses and I still can't bring myself to part with them even though I haven't shot them in years.garbage
- I even bought an adapter for my Fuji so that I could still shoot OM lenses. They have a good feel.garbage

Dragged this out of storage, and this is what you want. Surprisingly cheap on Ebay.garbage - I don’t think the Pentax ME has full manual... I might be wrong. Might need the ME Supernb
- I actually meant the Pentax MX sorry. The ME Super has a manual function but I read that it limits you.oey_oey
- Buyy a old Canon EOS 1.

After reading your comments and limiting my budget to 50€ to just buy what I really need these are the options so far:
Pentax ME Super wit 50mm for 35€
Olympus OM 20 with 50mm for 50 to 60€ (maybe with extra 35-70)
Nikon FG 20 with 50mm for 60€above budget
Olympus OM 2 with 50mm for 75€
The choice seems to be pretty obvious despite none being my first option.
I will continue to check what’s on the market till the end of the week then make a decision.
Thanks everybody for your input so far
- The OM 2 is not free from usage marks of course.oey_oey
- The OM 20 is from the father of a friend of mine and comes pristine with some extras.oey_oey
- ^ sounds like a good buy.monNom
- had an OM1 w/ 40mm lens for years. fantastic! mechanical shutter, no batteries needed. I would save a bit more for the OM2. who cares about cosmetics :)futurefood
- Not all 50s are equal. You don’t want to save 20 or 30 bucks on a mediocre lens when each roll of film is like $15 plus processing, ya know?nb
- OM 20 seems like a bargainnb
- i've had a few OM10 and they have always been my favourite. need to take them in to get fixed. not sure how, but they all broke.scruffics
- The Pentax ME Plus has buttons instead of a shutter wheel. And just saw one for 29€. The OM 2 I found out now has the lens a bit damaged on the outside as welloey_oey
- That’s hella cheap for an OM 2. Sus!nb
- lol bruh spend like $20K on photo equipment then come here with your $50 dingy
clownsgrafician - "limiting my budget to 50€" LOLgrafician
- A camera should cost more than four rolls of film but it doesn’t have to hahahanb
- tank0210
- What’s with all the video cameras?nb
- I do a lot of video work. Mostly actually.tank02
- Funny how that happened.

- Nice! I used to have a 5D. Really loved it.Chimp
- 5D rocks, just had the buy the R5 for the hybrid video job. My jobs are all run and gun, so yeah. I need to build up fast.tank02

I've pretty much stopped buying gear recently. I feel like I've arrived a bit with this guy. Now to save for some gorgeous M mount glass. I think range finders are what I enjoy shooting with the most.
The tape, that's the stealth mode option I use for street photography. Especially when I visit hellscapes like DTLA lol

I ended up buying the Olympus OM20 from my friend's father.
Camera, 50mm 1:1,8 Zuiko lens, winder, 3 filters, sunshade, remote trigger, 2 macro lenses plus a case. Some material to seal the film area.
70€.
Lost an auction for a Nikon FG plus 50mm Nikkor lens five minutes ago. My highest bid was 70€ and it went for 71€.
That would have been my first option as a camera to start shooting again but I'm pretty happy about the deal also because it's guaranteed to work from a reliable source. Time will tell if I really need something better but to start I think it's perfect.
I will order some Ilford HP5 Plus right away to start with.
Can't wait to start! Thanks everybody for your opinions and advice, I really appreciate it.
I'll share some pictures later ;-)

- I love it. Question: Do you have to de-rig often? I see the fucking dreaded Peak Design strap button, and that's an audio nightmare even with a mic.garbage
- Signed: Somebody that really hates the Peak Design snap system. I'm guessing you use it with two points for stabilization?garbage
- @garbage — I lie hand holding the sony so yeah I de-rig often. I hear ya about the peak straps! I just can't find anything else that's small and doesn't get inok_not_ok
- ...the way.ok_not_ok
- The thing that kills me about Peak is those would be perfect if there wasn't so much slack in the loops.garbage
- Nice stuff. I still rock the GH4!stoplying
- YakuZoku1
- three for the price of one.utopian
- Why 6K and not 4K or 8K?grafician
- Isn't everything broadcasted at 1080p or 4K at most?grafician
- so you can have wiggle room for 4k?kaiyohtee
- the 6k thing wasn't the selling point for me, I scale everything down to 1080 anyway :)YakuZoku
- but yeah shooting 6k you can re-frame shit when scaling it down to 1080YakuZoku

- I have most of these, great cameras. Selling my rx1 though, it’s not as perfect as the Anb
- The A is in Nikon’s top 5 cameras of ALL TIME. Easilynb
- Agree 100%. The A is so good, this is my second copy. One of the finest for sure.futurefood
- Just picked up the RX1 recently. Really enjoy shooting with it so far.futurefood
- I love me some old flashes too, except many don't swivel to be able to bounce lightHijoDMaite
- I have a second backup A as well. Picked it up when Nikon had some refurbs.nb
- The RX1 is capable of gorgeous images, but they have a certain look that you can’t get around. And it’s slow and cumbersome.nb
- Top right pls. Bottom left if I'm feeling grungy.garbage

- I forget the sub-model that this is, but it is one of the last USSR models. Note the brand name is Cyrillic, but the lens shield is in English.garbage
