We always do custom. We reuse a lot of components but it's always custom. These are high end clients with a budget that are looking to stand out with something original. Pre-built themes are usually extremely bloated and slow everything down, but they do have have their place in the market. I've used them in the past for freelance with clients that don't have much of a budget and just want something up. Honestly the pre-build themes can sometimes be more of a pain customizing than just building it from scratch.

    Two design questions:

    *warning* first time designer here...

I noticed that while creating my "site identity" type homepage link in the top left corner in wordpress, I do have the option to upload an image to that space instead. It would certainly be easier for me, since I want to add text effects to the text and that's easily done in Ps. I realize that uploading an image could also affect SEO negatively but I see websites doing it. My question is this:

    1. What is the generally accepted "best practice" when designing websites, to leave the text intact at the cost of aggravation(more time/effort to design), or ignore SEO and use images of the text if you need something not easily done otherwise?

    2. Am I generally right in thinking that a top nav bar is better for an audience who is expected to be on a full sized monitor, and a hamburger + left side slide out nav is better if you think your audience is viewing from mobile?

All I could find on google was "most sites need left nav... but blogs make use of right nav" but they are weird, apparently. No mention of when you use top nav.

    Thanks.

    • I'll start by saying that this is a weird topic to see come up in 2023.palimpsest
    • 1. I don't know much about SEO but most sites do have an image as their logo and probably rely on alt tags for SEO.palimpsest
    • 2. Yes, we want to see a text nav in desktop. A hamburger nav is accepted in mobile. If you have items that can fit, no need for hamburger on mobile.palimpsest
    • I don't think it matters where your nav is placed (CSS) as long as your html hierarchy makes sense.palimpsest
    • Pro SEO here
      1. leave text and url structure for best seo results
      2. yes
      trooperbill
    • I guess that leads to a 3rd question. Am I basically designing for iPad since size-wise it's about halfway between a monitor and a mobile phone?cherub
    • I can't streamline for both extremes at the same time, I don't think...cherub
    • I think you can you just gotta choose which one you're going to start with.palimpsest
    • start with one, but primary goal of the website should be the focus for each breakpoint. i always use templates now because breakpoints are built in.doesnotexist
    • because by far, websites are primarily made to transact, and secondarily to capture your contact information for further marketing.doesnotexist
    • Haven't used it that much but my recent experience of wordpress.com vs self hosted is that the .com, which it sounds like you are using, is awful for SEO.webazoot
    • Or more so - is awful for being picked up by Google. So I think logo image vs text logo is not something I'd worry about.webazoot
    • Cherub, you'd be surprised what you can do with coding re: text effects, I'd say pretty much anything you can do in PS or close enough to it. just google the_niko
    • effects your looking for and you'll find tons of resources._niko

    Update:

I've been working nonstop all night on nothing but coffee and adrenalin trying to figure out how to import an add on domain to my shared hosting. Fuck me, what a nightmare. I hate domains.
Also, don't get me started on those stupid SSL certificates.

Whatever, I showed that add on domain who's boss. @ record? A stands for how AWESOME I AM right? I'm feeling drunk on my own power right now LOL

*trigger warning** (ignore all that, I'm j/k of course)

So once I got back to doing the actual design stuff. I took that "breakpoint" advice doesnotexist gave up there^ and ran with it. That lead to learning about columns and blocks, mostly because she seems to really like them here...

    https://learn.wordpress.org/tuto…

Finally it occurred to me... doesnotexist is right. What is the goal of my website? Because that will dictate how I think about the breakpoints and how to go about structuring the rows. It REALLY made sense @ 5:20 in the video below, because he gives a really good diagram showing how it will work. Then *poof* it all clicked into place in my mind.

I get it now. @ 5:22 in the video the grey part is your block level div tag, the purple part is perhaps another block level tag maybe paragraph? and the columns are a span tag that you control with css to make the columns auto scale as the viewport gets scaled up or down at certain breakpoints.

Do I have the basic idea correct?

You design with the columns adjacent knowing they will be scaled down then swapped under each other on tiny devices?

Go easy on me. Still learning...

I know it's Christmas and I'm the only doofus working on his wordpress site but I can't stop thinking about it. I worked all night last night and kept failing over and over.

I was trying to do something very very simple.

I was trying to embed a patreon button on the home page of my website.

I tried all sorts of things... First I tried 'CodeBard's Patron button' plugin... Didn't work. During plugin install I didn't know the 'become a patron' button was called "Pledge Growth" and I think I chose 'no' during install when I should have said 'yes' .

Btw, what is a 'sidebar widget'? Why does it have to be sidebar? Why can't I put the embed the same as I embed youtube videos? (not a sidebar)

Anyway, that plugin is mainly for adding the embed to BLOG POSTS.

Gave up, then I tried the patreon widget embed code found here. https://www.patreon.com/dashboar…

After putting that code into my footer using the 'header footer custom html' plugin and the code I insert upon saving and refreshing... does nothing whatsoever.

I seem to remember having this problem before. IIRC wordpress by default is very resistant to you wanting to change the headers and footers and design the home page. It ALWAYS expects you to make 'Posts' and when thats not what you want to do the whole process grinds to a halt. Why?

I like wordpress but they don't encourage you to think outside the box when it comes to veering away from this cookie cutter "posts" method. First off, there is a bunch of ugly cluttered bullshit all around each "post". I don't want to display the author, or have a search box to search posts, I don't want none of that. First off, this is very narrow minded. As I add content to the site, I want to do it dynamically, not linearly. A stream of time based blog posts is linear. Why do I have to design linearly? It's 2023 FFS!

I'd like to have a nice, rich home page. I finally figured out how to make the patreon button display on my home page, using a blog post, but it looks like crap and half the time on mobile the embed doesn't show up (although the gap of dead space is there) properly.

Anyway, back to designing. Button blocks are stupid and embeds are kinda hard sometimes.

One day I'll be a wordpress ninja. Not today.

    • It's just a basic cms that can be extended to do almost anything. I agree the blog model is past it's best before but I like the core of wp.spot13
    • I prefer the Roots Bedrock framework as a starter for most sites: https://roots.io/bed…spot13

    Musician want a website.
    Sent this as an example:

    https://www.awaremusic.art/

    I never used Webflow.
Client asks if I can make it with Wix.

Anyone can recommend a similar Wix template that also uses similar effects?

    • wix? just say nohans_glib
    • but wix ought to be able to do that, you just need to source the right elements , then hack the css as best you can.hans_glib
    • he just wants it as reference. I suggested a one page website and gave him some examples and he knows this bandoey_oey
    • I don't think we'll use all effectsoey_oey
    • Re-did a site for a band who had a wix site that wasn't that different from this example. I tried to see what the template was but can't find it.webazoot
    • So there should be something similar availible.(Don't know what the issue was but they were struggling to update the wix site)webazoot
  • oey_oey1

And talking about Webflow, who's using it here?
    How's the learning curve?
