Apple studies self-driving car, auto industry source says.

It makes total sense that they'd be looking into self driving cars. Self driving cars are more of a software problem then an operator driven electric car. It's a new space, one that doesn't really exist and whatever the detractors say Apple has done best in the last two decades when they have entered new territory. (Music/Cellphones/Tablets) and Apple still views itself as a company that does that.
The folks at Apple are certainly smart enough to realize that when all that's left to do on phones is reskin the OS and chase for the largest, highest resolution screen that there's no where left to meaningfully innovat with cellphones. Watches aren't going to revolutionize anything. Cable companies actively work against Apple breaking into the industry (no doubt they have a product here). Self driving cars would be a place where they can do what they've done historically: solve the software problem on a consumer device and marry it with well engineered hardware.
Too bad their maps data and routing algorithms are such utter shit. They will need to figure out how to close the data gap with Google. Google has been at it longer and have more data sources, and that's a huge reason why they're so far ahead with things like OK google and Maps.
There was a time when Apple could have showed us what Smart Cars are going to be (beyond the basic concept), and have it be lovely. There's a good chance those times are over. Though I hope not.

somwhere in 2019: I am sorry Mr. Mekk, your 2017 Apple iCar is not supported anymore. Please buy another one. Its also lighter and comes with a new USB port that no one knows yet.

Electric cars are not a step forward. Surely hydrogen cars is where we need to be heading!!
- “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.”ORAZAL
- I think it is obtuse to focus on the type of fuel. I find self driving (non individually owned) cars a better alternative.ORAZAL
- there was a killed inventor who made a car run on water. to open source for a trillion $ industry.yurimon
- water needs to be converted to hyrdrogen, which requires energy. so no, it's not miraculous water power.inteliboy

Forget the rumor: Apple will never build cars
That seems to be the fantasy of Apple fanatics who are rather liberally interpreting the news that Apple has hired several hundred automotive experts and started something called Project Titan to supposedly develop an electric car. Among the rumors: Apple design chief Jony Ive has a passion for cars and thinks most current models are dreary. The company already has a secret testing prototype (which happens to be a minivan) outfitted with all kinds of funky gear. And since Apple has been hiring talent from electric-car maker Tesla (TSLA), it can only mean an iCar will be coming soon to revolutionize .... something .... about driving.
- WSJ loves to jump to conclusions with Apple, just like they did this time and got everyone riled up.monospaced
- Also, are people forgetting Tesla was the one poaching Apple's people hardcore too?monospaced
- Good for sales. Everyone likes to hear about the next great thing Apple will do.formed
- It didn't do well for them actually. People dumped stock on the rumormonospaced
- the fact you said "never" in the first sentence makes it pointless to read the rest of the post. sorry bud!Miguex

I don't think they'll make a car either. Too much risk. They like playing it safe, items with huge margins and production they know how to control.
That said, they could easily create the heart of the cars - batteries (they just poached some employees), drive and main interface. That could then go in any car, they could make basic to high end, etc. Just a bigger version of what they make now.
Seems smart and fairly safe (vs. making an entire car).

Looks like it is real...
- "Apple representatives declined to comment for this story."monospaced
- "Apple may decide to scrap its car effort or delay it if executives are unhappy with progress, as they’ve done before with other secret projects, the people said."monospaced
- I wouldn't be surprised if I found out Apple was working on 100 completely new, secret projectsmonospaced
- They officially "declined to comment" but the story is obviously sourced from someone at Applereanimate

- stretching innovation is more profitable. then boosting it.yurimon
- True, but diminishing returns. So this makes sense.jtb26
