It makes total sense that they'd be looking into self driving cars. Self driving cars are more of a software problem then an operator driven electric car. It's a new space, one that doesn't really exist and whatever the detractors say Apple has done best in the last two decades when they have entered new territory. (Music/Cellphones/Tablets) and Apple still views itself as a company that does that.

The folks at Apple are certainly smart enough to realize that when all that's left to do on phones is reskin the OS and chase for the largest, highest resolution screen that there's no where left to meaningfully innovat with cellphones. Watches aren't going to revolutionize anything. Cable companies actively work against Apple breaking into the industry (no doubt they have a product here). Self driving cars would be a place where they can do what they've done historically: solve the software problem on a consumer device and marry it with well engineered hardware.

Too bad their maps data and routing algorithms are such utter shit. They will need to figure out how to close the data gap with Google. Google has been at it longer and have more data sources, and that's a huge reason why they're so far ahead with things like OK google and Maps.

There was a time when Apple could have showed us what Smart Cars are going to be (beyond the basic concept), and have it be lovely. There's a good chance those times are over. Though I hope not.

    • making nice UI's does not make Apple a reliable software developer.mekk
