5K iMac and other powerful mac configurations are not worth it because the iMac's cooling system is underpowered and the CPU will constantly be throttled down because of overheating.
If you want a Mac Pro be aware that they are only cost-effective in very high configurations and can not really be upgraded.
- I think they can be upgradedmonospaced
- need 5 TB more space; old mac pro: smash two HDDs inside. New Mac Pro: ???mekk
- Connect via thunderboltmonospaced
- I mean, it hardly has a real HD in it to begin with. It's designed to have all storage external.monospaced
- <<timeless
- lol thunderbolt and then you face your client with your fancypants hard drive he cannot plug anywhere. lolmekk
- First off, anyone doing video needs Thunderbolt or FireWire just to meet bandwidth. Second, files are rarely brought to clients on HDs for video.monospaced
- to clients on HDs for video. Finally, most HDs have Thunderbolt and USB, just like the Mac.monospaced
- Like RED for mac? oh wait..mekk

I've got a Mac Pro at work and a similar spec PC at home. I find the PC to be much faster (+ easy to upgrade), but the Mac Pro is far more reliable.
- Sounds about rightset
- what do you mean with reliable? Does your PC not start when it's cold outside? :)mekk
- My PC just enjoys crashing a little more than my Mac Pro. I'm a fan of reliability when it comes to work.DanFleetwood
- what kind of crashing? bluescreens or typical adobe shit? Bluescreens are mostly due to non-compatible ram-dimms..mekk
- Usually blue screen when rendering. CPU isn't too hot so don't think it's an overheating issue...DanFleetwood
- check the compatibilty of your ram/mainboard config and try another one if you have one.mekk

Worth it but not for you. Also the current models can't feed a 5K screen because connection standard is too slow. Next round they'll have a new standard in it. Can't have a 5K iMac screen and a Pro computer that can't feed a 5K screen, can we? No, that's not very Pro.
$1500 iMac might be enough. Since you're just getting into it.
I'm a bit worried about buying those unnecessarily compact macs with standalone graphics cards. MacBook Pros have been failing from that. Have iMacs? Intel Integrated graphics doesn't have that defect.
- The new Mac pro can run 3 4k displays at once actually.monospaced
- Yes but 0 5K displaysPupsipu
- besides the one in the iMac, which 5K display are you referring to?monospaced
- The one in the iMac. The thunderwhateverDispl... they have right now is too slow http://www.slashgear…Pupsipu

i'm thinking of one of these to replace my 2007 version - look good value
- 1GB 5770 is from 2009 man.. It's bottleneck your whole system. And why this odd RAM config?mekk

- now you went from a 12 core to a six core, the impact is massive depending on the software you use. What do you use your mac for and what is your budget? maybe we can get you the best config for you here..mekk
- for and what is your budget? maybe we can get you the best config for you here..mekk

If you have an excuse to get a Mac Pro, yes yes and yes. Those things are beasts.

Just bought a new Macbook Pro. Very impressed.
I've kept my old iMac (late 2009) and use it as a second monitor with a DV to Thunderbolt cable. Best of both worlds.

ifixit.com has guides for every model if you do take the SSD route.

If you wanted to save money you can get an SSD kit for iMac models that would seriously boost its speed.
But that said, if you can afford a Mac Pro then go for it! invest in your craft and you will reap the benefits.
Plus if a new one drops you can always sell quick and upgrade.
- SSD into an iMac is not a quick easy job though. Gotta take the screen off and logic board out etcsem

You'll need a good video card, mac pro ftw!

iMac with more ram. After Effects isn't too unusual.

Definitely Mac Pro over iMac. I had to buy a laptop for freelance last summer and wish I could have bought a Mac Pro instead. If you plan on using any 3D as well, you really be glad for the extra power.

Currently After Effects doesn't really use OpenCL, which the new Mac Pros offer serious speed with courtesy of the two Fire GPUs. FCPX and other native Apple stuff runs like butter on it, but Adobe is still only supporting NVidia's CUDA architecture, which didn't pan out so well and I suspect is a dead-end feature on After Effects (besides, you'd need a $1K+ card to benefit from it).
The new Pro is still great but yes, it probably could use a refresh. I suspect that like most of Apple's other kit said refresh will depend largely on what Intel does — the previous Mac Pros never got Thunderbolt because Intel didn't support it with the high end chipsets those motherboards used. So who knows when an actual refresh will occur?

Go with this.

a very upgradable macpro for the third of the price. Just make sure to get the right parts as listed and follow the installations guide closely.

IMac is fine for AE. Gotta specced out up late model 2013 iMac and have no issues whatsoever still, plenty fast enough. But hey, if u got the loot, why not.

what config is your 2009 imac exactly? sometimes it helps to just clean your computer, esp. it's cooling system, add some RAM, maybe an SSD and it'll run like day 1 :)
