So I need to confirm the diagnosis for myself, because I was diagnosed as a child. I'm reasonably certain that it's still an issue for me, though it comes less for me at work (where I feel it actually works to my advantage) and more so in my relationships (professional and personal). Anyone else experience this?
- what was or is your diet?yurimon
- Totally shit. And I don't exercise. Both things I need to do better at. No time like tomorrow I suppose.jtb26

This is my theory for 99%....of course taking speed will help you be alert and focus. So will cocaine. Doesn't mean you should drug up to get something done. Suck it up and persevere. Too many people make excuses for so many things.
There are legitimate health issues that drugs are necessary (I am one of those, unfortunately), but I feel like people just read some literature and think "oh, yeah, I guess I must be that 'cause I don't like to sit and study boring crap for 10 hours at a time".

On the other hand, is there anything wrong with taking a drug to enhance your concentration in a distracting work environment? We don't generally condemn people lining up to get their caffeine fix at Starbucks every morning. Maybe the medical condition used to prescribe it is questionable, but that is just society's way of justifying something that there is clearly a consumer demand for.

I have it. Got medicated as teenager. Helped me get through school somehow. Lost multiple jobs as an adult because I cannot focus on shit. Started doing all kinds of sport 2 years ago, it's better now but I am still vulnerable for being careless and doing a lot of mistakes. Could easily earn double money if I could focus better but I don't want to go back to medication. It made me dull.
- maybe look for nutritional or natural medicine approach. seems to resolve especially in teens if you do overall lifestyle reviewyurimon

- I have tried a lot. Best for me is getting rid of all my energy doing sports :)mekk
- You still eat sugar? Also to much energy is imbalance in Chinese medicine. to much energy in the head? or lower part of the body?yurimon
- if its to much energy in the head, toast mediation practices can sometimes help bring it down.yurimon
- also that type of practice may be hard at first but if you can get over the hump you can gain control of your energyyurimon
- you are basically becoming aware of yourself and can understand whats going on in your body. thus control on a more conscious levelyurimon
- more conscious levelyurimon
- I tried some amateurish yoga exercises and they really worked :) gotta repeat them some time..mekk

It's just called procrastination...

of course it's a thing - EVERYONE IS EXACTLY THE SAME AND HAS TO BE, OTHERWISE THEY'RE BROKEN AND MUST BE MEDICATED.
- I jest, but I'd probably suffer from whatever it is if I didn't ..er.. 'medicate' regularly.detritus
- I just object to it being labelled a thing that then needs to have a load of pharmaceuticals thrown at itdetritus
- ..especially where kids are concerned.detritus
- Not that I imagine many children suffer from Adult ADHD, of course.detritus

There's a big difference between people who just have poor concentration and those who actually have ADD. It's like people who like to keep their house clean and don't like dirt saying "I'm so OCD". They're not obviously, they're just being hyperbolic.
For those with the actual disorder it's a much different story. It takes time and support for things like exercise and diet to work, and the trouble with many ADDers is that they have trouble forming the habits. Your brain works differently. Deciding you're going to exercise and eat better sounds easy for folks who don't have it because they don't have problems with impulse control, or they don't hyper focus on something else when they mean to go to the gym and then blow it off altogether because something else is stimulating their brain. So for some, if it means taking meds for a little while until they can get themselves under control and form the right habits I don't think that's the worst solution. I don't think treatment should ever be take two pills everyday and see how it goes. I think you need to build coping skills.
In my case I'm lucky I have a girlfriend who is encouraging me to exercise and taking me a long with her. (Goes a long way). Unfortunately I say shit with out thinking about what I'm saying and hurts her feelings to often and it's been a big issue. I'm only now realizing that this may be my ADHD (again haven't been diagnosed since I was a child and need to be evaluated). She's not sure she can handle that part and I need to figure out a way to stay mindful in conversations and not let my focus drift.

I think it's realizing that you dont give a crap about a lot of stuff.

@detritus - i'm with you on the medication. It's obviously taken advantage of by the pharmaceutical companies. But I wonder whether it's more of a way of thinking than a condition.

outside the nurse's office in elementary school there was a 6-foot tall paper mache super mario one of the art classes had built. whenever i'd go to take my meds (ritalin for supposed adhd) i'd instead palm them then stick 'em up his nose. (the pills made me miserable and sick to my stomach, don't give your kids that shit.) i did this for years, and all the while they just kept upping my dose because it "wasn't working". so somewhere in texas there's a 6-foot mario filled with speed like some kind of crackhead piñata

"We found that the German-language version of Der Spiegel ran an article in 2012 that skeptically examined the large increase in diagnoses of mental disorders in recent years and quoted Dr. Eisenberg on that subject. A software-based translation of that article from German to English does describe Dr. Eisenberg as the "father of ADHD" and report that during his "last interview" he said something similar to "ADHD is a prime example of a fictitious disease." However, allowing for the vagaries of translation and reading the statement in context, some native German speakers have reported that Dr. Eisenberg wasn't asserting that ADHD isn't a real disorder, but rather that it is overdiagnosed:"

"My patient “treated” his A.D.H.D simply by changing the conditions of his work environment from one that was highly routine to one that was varied and unpredictable. All of a sudden, his greatest liabilities — his impatience, short attention span and restlessness — became assets. And this, I think, gets to the heart of what is happening in A.D.H.D."

Try looking into the world of nootropic supplements to give focus, alertness, and energy?

"Consider that humans evolved over millions of years as nomadic hunter-gatherers. It was not until we invented agriculture, about 10,000 years ago, that we settled down and started living more sedentary — and boring — lives. As hunters, we had to adapt to an ever-changing environment where the dangers were as unpredictable as our next meal. In such a context, having a rapidly shifting but intense attention span and a taste for novelty would have proved highly advantageous in locating and securing rewards — like a mate and a nice chunk of mastodon. In short, having the profile of what we now call A.D.H.D. would have made you a Paleolithic success story."
