scarabin, tiny-house movement is about ideological "sticking it to the man" - a fantasy that shows the world that one can live without the corporate blessing. As such it's much less about the reality (indeed, where do i put all mu stuff??) and more about ideology.
- i guess i just never considered a garage to be a corporate blessingscarabin
- more like "working with what the man will let you have"cannonball1978

I'm 2/3 way thru an off-grid project. Will be about $15k all up when finished (and that was with purchase of a few tools i didn't have like nailguns, compressor, generator etc). I have to say, this sort of thing is so much easier and accessible than, say, 20 years ago. The underlying technology for off-grid living and information on how to put it all together is so much better.
- very nice. looks like it's going to be a sweet place. what the land like? what are you doing for water?Gnash
- I do hope that you planted 6 foot deep concrete footing below the foundation. If not, your dream house will be floating down the hill in a few months.utopian
- did a bear eat the bottom part?fadein11
- 4' footings (8 of them). Views are pretty insane looking the other way. She's mostly black now, and the bottom has been trimmed ;)hardhat
- Tapped a spring for water. Goes through a springbox and into a 55 gallon holding tank. I guess the winter freeze will make life interestinghardhat

i don't live "off the grid" yet but i'm getting closer. my bills are now under $300/mo (total) and i'm out of debt. if i was rich or had money i'd be totally off the grid by now but i have to figure out how to get some cash next.
- good for you. ontario, right?Gnash

Grabbed this from the Reddit thread the Georges posted above:
"there's not enough space and resources for everyone to do what you're doing. It's great you can do that, but it's only possible for some people to live like that.
The problem is, if 7 billion people wanted solar panels like you, that would require huge amounts of energy and material, and we would trash the earth in the process.
Making compost is easy; pile shit up until it decomposes. nothing fancy needed. I've planted a garden, but this is no substitute for farming.
Not everyone can walk away. Off-grid living is for people who are relatively rich and do not have debt. My net worth is about -$10k, so I can't go anywhere."- That's a bit defeatist statement; there is not enough paints in the world for all of us to be painters - so what, so not everyone is a painter.pr2
- everyone is a painter.pr2
- In a status quo situation you're right. but in a SHTF scenario, there isn't enough space for all to do thisGnash

In recent years there was a huge growth in the "away from society" movement - kind of a comeback to "fuck the system" of the 60s and early 70s with communes. The commune system doesn't work - noone is truly equal - there is always one that's more powerful than another, so people are searching for ways to "fuck the system" but in private, Thus you have the tiny house movement (shelter), grow your garden movement (food that doesn't kill you), on less extreme end the community-first movement ("you can't change the world but at least can do something locally"). Some sociologist would say that it's a direct result of people's uncertainty about the future and their lack of understanding of the societal movements and history. People don't have the safety net (financial or otherwise) and they search for the basics: food, shelter, community. I subscribe to that analysis, so before you go into middle of nowhere and "start a new life" make sure you are not doing it became you don't know how the same feelings of "loss" were prevalent through centuries - and though the centuries, despite all those fears, the shit generally speaking, never hit the fan.
- yeah. and i think in our microculture we're just all in advertising and want our souls backscarabin
- there is also the "quotation" movementcannonball1978

I'm a pedantic cunt but if you're freelancing then you're not really off grid are you.
I've definitely thought about that kind of lifestyle though, many many times.
- Their is a nice on the grid whilst off the grid balance I've been refining for 5 years now...ideaist
- ...DON'T limit yourself to a specific definition, find what you want and curb your life to accommodate it.ideaist
- Oh I agree completely :)set
- If you're freelancing and your clients pays you cash while all your communication is done face to face you're still off the grid.ORAZAL
- ... you're still off the grid.ORAZAL
- I don't consider being on the internet off grid... do you?set
- he does have a point. freelancing as a carpenter perhaps, but if you can be reached by email or phone, you are not off the gridMiguex

Well looking at this thread made me nostalgic.
My parents had enough somewhere in the mid of the '90, and we moved far from the intercity to the suburbs in a nice house with huge garden with basic infrastructure.
They had this idea that we produce what we eat, and that's a great thing to do. This is not so easy for a 5 member family without any past in farming. I can remember the smell of a real tomato, how I loved our bees when they first produced honey, real fresh milk (that's one of the things what was from our neighbor), harvesting cherry for the entire year, and everything was within reach. What I hated was: weeding, watering, cleaning 0-24 (weeding potato on Saturday in 30C it's a pleasure for a kid) , shovel 3-10 layers of chicken or rabbit shit, learn the fact that rabbits are actually assholes. Bugs, insects and shit everywhere. My last memory from this place before we moved that one day I was awoken in the middle of the night because a nice insect went into my ear and scared the shit out of me.
So think about this twice :)
And we all three kids grew up healthy, respecting the nature and with the knowledge how the real things smell and taste :).Oh and my parents marriage ended shorty after we moved to a flat and liquidated almost 10 years of "Living Off the Grid".
