Hi guys,
I am about to buy a Canon 6D Camera and want to invest in some good glass.
In the future I would love own these two beauties:
Canon 24-70/2.8 II and the
Canon 70-200/2.8 IIBut now my budget only allows me two buy one of the two. I shoot all kinds of stuff; photo and video, indoors and outdoor.
My question...
Which one would you get first? The 24-70 or the 70-200?Please share your thoughts.. Thanks.

24-70

24-70/2.8 is a monster of a standard zoom, if that's what you're looking for. Fantastically useful focal range, good and sharp wide open, good colour and contrast. I'm more of a prime lens kind of guy, but the 24-70/2.8 really is a stonking lens.
- Not saying the 70-200 isn't good, it is. But if you shoot all kind of stuff, as you say, the 24-70 will be more useful to you in the first instance.Continuity

is the 6D a crop or full frame censor?
- bogue0
Well I have the 70-200 on a full frame censor.. and its not quite as much of a specialized telephoto lens as i thought it was going to be. in fact at 70mm it almost feels like a prime 50. So the 24-70 should be a pretty versatile shooter and the better lens to start with.... and then the 70-200 will be a good upgrade later when you want something with a bit more distance.

not to mention the 70-200 is a beast and not something you'd want to walk around with all the time.

24-70
- i have both, and to be honest, my go to lens is usually always the 16-35autoflavour
- but i like wideautoflavour
- I have one of those too. I use it about a third of the time. My other is 24-70.CyBrainX

I'd get a bunch of primes... the Canon 85mm 1.8 is very nice, the new 24mm 2.8 IS is pretty nice too... you can get a 300 F4 IS which is very nice, but then again, I'\m a nikon shooter who loves prime lenses, and has a 70-200 2.8 and a bunch of primes + a 24-85.....
For me, there's not much drama in the 24-70, yes, it's great, and very competent, I might get a cheaper 24-105 if I shot canon, then a 70-200F4 and spent the rest of my budget on something prime and wonderful.... maybe a 135 F2....
- this would've gotten my vote, but wasn't one of the choices. :)johnny_wobble
- @Vacorcist thanks for the suggestion. What would be your first prime lens to pick?houdou

also, a used old 28mm F2.8 or a 50mm 1.8 is cheap, and gives quite good optical results even if not so deluxe, so you can save your $$$ for a nice sweeet prime, like that 135 F2....
- Yeah, I've got my sights on the Canon 135, I don't care if it's 'too sharp'.Continuity

Definitely get the 40mm f/2.8 pancake to turn the camera into a portable point-and-shoot.
- I mean, other than 24-70, get that first :)shaft
- @Shaft Thanks. Would you recommend this one over the Canon EF50 F1.8?houdou
- I have both the 40 and 50mm f/1.4 but the latter is pricier. The 1.8 is somewhat underwhelming.shaft
- I mean, the 40 is a great walkabout lens, always good to have one like that. At that price, can't fail.shaft
- 1.8 is probably not worth the inconvenience of not having any zoom.CyBrainX

I have the 50 1.4 and the 24-105 f4 both brilliant.

24-70. I use that 99% of the time

I have a 28-70/2.8 and I love the results

Thanks guys, so most of you would pick the 24-70mm. The one thing that troubles me a bit is the lack of IS on the 24-70mm. Especially when shooting hand held video. Is this something to be concerned about? Or is this still a good "allround" lens for filming?
- pango0
ya that thing is heavy. with out a shoulder mount i can't really hold it steady for long. IS would definitely be a plus.
as for photo, 2.8 is more than plenty to keep your photo still.

i have the 70-200 2.8 and it is a bit of lump... you can certainly feel it being lugged around your neck all day. I don't have the 24-70 but that is a great range on a full frame censor. Prime lens's are my preference but not the best for out and about shooting if you've got to stop and change lens every 5 minutes!

For video, manyb people use a zacuto finder the back screen to focus and a benro or manfrotto 500 series video monopod, with a fluud head, quick release and a "foot" on the bottom.

i am too looking into getting a 6D too. with some of the new sigma Art series lenses. the 35mm or the 50mm and a zoom lens too.
