The new Nokia Lumia advertises 41 megapixels.
http://www.nokia.com/us-en/phone…
Does that mean the photos are 20mb and 10000's of pixels wide?
Does it actually matter or is it a crazy marketing scheme?

It means MySpace needs a new financing round to store all those selfies.

peeps get excited on more resolution as if it were some sort of competition. What for? 90% of those photos will end up on instagram at 750px by 750px.
Same goes for video.
- the same image resized from more data still makes a better image than one resized from a smaller one.cannonball1978
- Rather have a smooth 6mp than a noisy 100mpPeter

what I don't understand is how many megabytes is a 41mp image? how much storage is on that phone?
- oey0
does it make coffee?
no!
so, what?!

The point is NOT to just have a massive picture. It's to have a lot of data for features like photo recomposition, image/video stabilization, non-destructive digital zoom (which is actually just cropping with that much data to pull from) etc. etc.

still won't beat film.

who cares, lens is shit.

can't believe no one has called timeline on this shit...been out for months now.
- fredddddd couldn't give half a toss about timeline.Continuity

so what! if the sensor is tiny and the lens is shit it could be 200 megapixels and still be turd.

Hello, fredddddd.

I think its a bit ridiculous and would much prefer a really good 12 megapixel camera.
BUT.
having said that, if you are gonna post process the hell out of your photos, the more pixels the better. Of course RAW would be a lot better, but having that many pixels will give more flexibility in post than standard phone cams.My main concern would be the mb size of these images, but you can always shoot at smaller sizes.

This is why iPhone is failing and Apple is doomed.

The Nokia camera uses its 41mb sensor to create 8mb pics that are way better than what a 8mb sensor is capable of. And also to create a zoom capability.
So it's actually putting the 41mb to good use.

One day your kids will look back and laugh at the 41 megapixel 2D camera, and make some comment about old people. :/

I think their goal is not for final image size but for zooming. Most phone cameras simply crop in on an image to 'zoom' rather than doing the proper lens adjustments. With 41MP to work with, you can crop in 4x and still end up with 5MP worth of pixels.
I haven't used it though, just guessing.
- But cramming all those pixels on the tiny phone sensor doesn't make good pixels, does it?monospaced
- Some people say it's all about quality of the pixel data, not just the quantity of themmonospaced
- @akiersky, that's actually what it does. It keeps the original but automatically generates a 5mp version, as well.ETM

Everyone who says the photos on the 1020 are shit should go actually look at some of the examples... there are plenty online.
- I don't believe anyone said anything remotely like that here.monospaced
- No, not remotely.. not cruddlebub or epic_rim eluding to the very thing.ETM
- But thanks for your usual token, pointless comment.ETM
- and thanks for your token unwarranted insultmonospaced
- i just said it could be 200mp and be turd, its a phone! not an SLR/DSLR.... and its a nokia...cruddlebub

This is impressive.
- it is, but the overall effect looks a bit fake - like they're in a studio with a backdrop.hans_glib
