Did you know that people actually take "art direction" classes in school?

I find it funny how a large agency will pitch your business with their top brass and A team but when you find yourself 2 months into the engagement you get the C team and little involvement from the brass. I've worked with a few mid tier agencies in NYC and they are very hands on, communicative, and fantastic problem solvers.
It's ironic how many "big" agencies simply farm out work to other mid sized agencies to do the work. Makes you wonder what "CD's" even do at big agencies - do they just look over the work of other agencies and swap out the branding on a PDF and pass along.
Never had any desire to work at a big agency after having interfaced with them working in house at large companies. I'm all client side, I prefer the team environment and working 260 degrees on a single product, more my style but to each his own I guess.

- Huge agencies really farm out work to smaller "competitors"? Do the small guys know the deal?newuser
- Yes they do farm out work, and a lot of the times it is to freelancers as well.utopian

Why do they call themselves "creatives" is they can't actually create something on their own?

I work for this big agency in Puerto Rico and I can tell you they do farm out work.
In my last job (medium size agency) they also farm out work.
Our competition, another big agency in Puerto Rico also farms out work. The sad thing is they farm out work to the same guy in Urugay. I don't know what his rate/deal is but when you hear the job is going to be outsourced, it is certainly that same person who is going to do it. And yes, they all know the use the same "solution".

When you are at an agency:
"Clients are dumb, they don't have a clue on what is happening. With this creative and strategy, they could rule the world but they are not creative enough to see"When you are the client:
"Agencies are so dumb. They just don't get our business. They don't try to even understand what we do here. They think they are creative but all I see is crap."

sounds about right.

So if the big agencies farm out a lot of the work, what do they actually do?
They exist to have flashy offices and fast talking salesmen to pitch the work? What do the 100's of people do there?
- freedom0
The small agencies have crappy clients though and secretly do big client work on the side?

> What do the 100's of people do there?
There has been a lot of research and studies in this matter and the consensus is that no one really knows for sure:
Some scholars maintain that it's to the bigger part obscure ritualistic dwellings that within the tribe are marked down as research, while other maintain that research is not what to label it as the result of the dwellings doesn't amount to anything useful or even relevant; simply dwellings.
This field is not yet fully explored and further, more conclusive studies are needed.

I see so many portfolio where the person says they are a copywriter and art director and then show billboards, commercials or catalogs.
And you just know they didn't design any of it and have never designed or directed (film) anything in their lives, but somehow it's ok to show?
