I spent 10 years at "top" agencies doing projects ranging from entertainment and publishing to automotive and financial. I went client side a few years ago to try something new.
Now I'm working with the agencies; I'm the client.... and... they're fucking clowns.
They don't get it, they don't try to get it, their more focused on awards and PR than you're business goals. You can repeat yourself endlessly and they will still not get it. You can be nice, or brutally candid, doesn't matter. Trying to get them to work together with other agencies is like managing children who can't stop fighting over a broken toy.
They think they're "creatively pushing back" and in reality they just don't understand our business, our clients or what we're asking them to do.
It's sad. It's really sad.

oh, and i want it by yesterday.
xo- Not at all the problems we've tasked them with. We didn't define the solution, only the problem.antagonista

Why Talented Creatives Are Leaving Your Shitty Agency

This was my old boss. 95% of what he is saying is complete bullshit. Amazing. He's smart and great at bullshitting (he'll readily admit it), but it's amazing when he talks about all this shit that they do, when in reality its stuff maybe talked about once every year and never implemented.

you are just working with a lame agency that's all.
either that, or you are their smallest client and they just don't care.
find someone else, done deal

"either that, or you are their smallest client and they just don't care."
Agreed.

"you are just working with a lame agency that's all. either that, or you are their smallest client and they just don't care. find someone else, done deal"
Wrong. We're spending 10+ mil on agency fees and many times that on media buy. The agencies are very heavy hitters, but they don't get our business. They are trying to shoehorn their agenda into our budget.
- if you are spending 10mil then its probably a 100mil kind of agency and you are still their smallest clientMiguex
- find a smaller place where you would be appreciated and cared forMiguex
- Definitely not. Trust me. I know a lot of people at the agency. haha, they say it's a shitshow too.antagonista
- Find a small agency and be their biggest client, I think you'll see the difference.zarkonite

Trying out the idea of working with non-profits and so far is working out great. Meeting great people with brilliant ideas and since money is usually tight the projects get more creative instead of just throwing bunch of money to a concept.

I'm about to sign up for another big one next week and I'm already so drained from my present work,
I did an interview with another agency of medium size and they told me they would hit me back in two weeks even if their response was negative, that was one week ago,
should I contact them and ask them whats up or should I just give up and jump both feet in another behemoth agency?? :(

WK and TBWA always were the only two that seemed creative to me.
- Wk is still independent. Not sure about TBWA. Coincidence?identity
- Independent meaning?newuser
- WK always the bestgeorgesIII

Are we talking TV?
Advertising always seems like BS with lame people who can talk.
If you don't have a big product to launch across lots of media or celebrities to sign, there isn't a lot of real work to do. You come up with whatever lame idea and just keep on pushing it to the client.

posted by my friend, which sums up this campaign rather nicely:
"And yet more proof of how inward looking, condescending and unfunny advertising people can be."

Most people in advertising don't have enough skills in design and don't have enough skills to make a product, so they act cocky and convince you that they can sell your idea better than you.
- instrmntl0
I wouldn't say that they don't have enough skill, although some don't, as I've seen a lot of amazing people in advertising. Advertising is quick easy money.
- Most people who study advertising in school don't even learn design though. They learn concepts and how to pitch, not how to make things look good.newuser
- Those Ad Schools are fucking joke! I def agree people need a design background.instrmntl
- And not just go to those shitty ad schools. I think those are more for agencies to poach semi ok people for cheap.instrmntl
- Good art school have stupid advertising programs too.newuser
- newuser0
A lot of successful ad guys have English or Psychology degrees, which helps them BS and pitch, but maybe that's the problem. It's not really a field filled with trained "creative" people, unless you count the tv commercial directors, which ironically usually want to be anonymous.
- Which is why Ad guys love them. They make their shite scrips into award winning workbabaganush
