don't know if any of you played the closed beta but i did. after my time with it; a few hours worth, then again a couple more hours last friday. i was sold and went ahead and bought the game. i gotta say playing was a lot of fun. Yes, the smaller map size. I didnt care. that map size has a lot more detail per block now, and there is a lot more data to dig down into. (much more than the older titles.) also the aesthetics convey more than just pretty pictures, aesthetics of a block tells you information about the area. ie. trash on the streets, graffiti on the walls etc. traffic jams aren't just sprites anymore and the Glass Box engine is fantastic!
Im still not sure about Origin (dont care if it's an always online title. i have a lot of those games now) but more of the business practices of EA (just like many of you) fact of the matter, EA is a business and if selling DLCs and micro-payments works as a business model then so be it. (it's not like they invented the practice) and truth be told, they really aren't abusing it.
for all those who did buy the game. you can pre-load it tonight at 11pm it'll be available to play 12:01am

10GB of hard drive space? That's over 3,000 floppy disks! Forget it!

I used the play the original one for the PC and then Sim City 2000.
Never cared much about Maxis post being EA acquired.

Damn, I have been drooling over this game for a year and until now never read about the required internet connection. While I understand their rationale, it is a HUGE disappointment to hear that I won't be able to play in my own sandbox like I had with every version of this game that came before.
Yes, EA has a history of fucking customers, especially Mac users, and messing up potentially good games. Fortunately it seems like the Maxis team is keeping it to a minimum here, from what I've read.
That being said, I am fucking GLAD I have an internet connection and that I will be able to play this game and relive my childhood fascination with city simulation. No, I won't buy any DLC, I don't see any need for a graphics pack or whatever, and if I ever wanted to build in the style of ancient rome or whatever, I can probably pony up a few bucks, but I just don't see it happening.
Also, the multiplayer aspect seems fun. Build a city in a region, invite your friends to build cities in it too and have the cities interact. With all the downsides, I still think the game looks crazy good.

Glass Box has been in development for years, i can remember even as far back as 07, Maxis teasing us with rudimentary screens and tech demos. and from what i understand, Glass Box is both a render engine and simulation environment. With the SimCity franchise approaching the quarter century old mark, It was about time Maxis decided to refresh the series. a much needed revamp of the world’s best known city builder.
Yet i can't shake the feeling that EA is up to something sinister. We've seen them do with other Maxis titles of the past. They personally fucked up Spore, winch turned a genius idea into a off the self straight to trash title. EA scaled Spore down a year into it's development and the title held a strict 10 install DRM which had to be patched soon after its release. The Sims (another Maxis title) became a shopping cart for DLCs which was responsible for a couple class actions. To top that list, the Origin Software held a Big Brother approach to your actions. Including looking into your browser histories, software installs and monitoring system activity. all that so that they can "improve their software and market data." Since Origin's release that activity has been scaled down to just Origin and EA products.
DRM is a mixed issue at best. more times than it should DRM punishes the wrong party. ( cita: Batman Arkham City) With the new Simcity title, which is scheduled to release something this month, holds a Origin activation requirement and always on internet connection.
I've been excited about this title for a while; Hopefully EA doesn't make me sorry.
