In high school there was a graphic arts class where I was able to create some art on a old apple and then create a screen and print that art onto a bunch of clothes. I didn't know what design was then, but it is what pushed me in this direction.

animation and coding was a hobby for me i did on the side, had good jobs in communications 15 years ago, setting up and testing cell/microwave towers till one day a girlfriends boss asked me to animate something for them, they paid me $15k for a 2 week gig and I was sold. I made decent moneyz in the dot com days, loved it, sponsored my own racing in superbike, while hardly working 1/4 of the year.
now i feel like im just chasing the creative dragon when it comes to paying gigs. clients just wants god damn wordpress sites these days which pays shit and to me isn't very creative, even if i choose to make my own WP template from something like boilerplate or something, clients dont want to pay much these days, too much people out there offering services where they just add client content to per-designed WP templates they hardly even alter (if even at all) for like $1k or even $500, crazy shit.
then i got into video, shortly after the whole DSLR movement came along and now everyones into video, dropping those prices down. lol, fuck man.
ide love to be a war or foreign correspondent cameraman, but im too damn old to go about it via military, and to freelance, you need to pay your own way, travel, gear, flak jackets and even then the works not guaranteed.I could shoot/edit weddings and probably be pretty damn good at it, but my life would have to hit rock bottom before i make a decision to do that fuckin shit, no offense to anyone who does that, i just never wanted to do that.
if i dont get out of freelance and back with a proper agency soon, ill probably end up being some old news camera man or some crap, shooting those boring short morning news skits that no one cares about, like gardening with grandpa jones or cooking tips with ross, or some crap like that.

I thought I'd get into 3D work until realized the limited job market. I focused on print design for a while... until I realized the limited market. So I moved to online and interactive after a bunch more of that thar learning stuff.

My dad was a print apprentice in his youth and worked in print. By the time I came along he had moved into sales for a company that made packaging - not retail packaging but carton packaging for industry. Part of that job was still doing some basic printwork on the packaging the company devised, and my dad used to pay me from the company's petty cash for laying out artwork, reproducing company logos in black and white with rotring pens on art board, and letrasetting type. I was doing this from about the age of 8 years old. From about the age of four though, I was swallowing bits of lead type and scribbling in type catalogues because my dad ran a letterpress workshop from our family garage as a moonshine operation to earn a bit of extra cash outside work.
It wasn't the kind of 'cool hipster' letterpress that everyone thinks letterpress is all about these days though, it was proper jobbing printwork letterpress. My dad would make up order books and duplicate invoice pads and do really complicated bound stuff... books and legal documents that were essential to business back in those days. We also did letterheads, comp slips, business cards, wedding invites and envelopes.
I learned to comp hot metal text around the age of 8 or so. and I could prep and clean up an Adana press by 10. I had my first business card by about 10 too... I'd helped my dad typset business cards for various small companies in the area and I decided it was time I had one too. It was awesome. It had red and blue stars on it and I used to hand it out at school and tell all my friends to tell their dads where to come for their print requirements. It did actually bring my dad some additional business, despite the fact my dad was so paranoid about getting caught moonlighting that he refused to let me put our family name, phone number or address on the card. It just had my first name and my job title "Typesetter & Manager,
Wirral Print Services".I totally fucked my education up and when it was time to get out there the only thing I had was my really well rounded understanding of print, typesetting and repro, so I did a sort of apprenticeship (a YTS scheme) in a design studio and then five years later went to art school.

I was always pretty good at art at school, but also continued with A-levels in physics and maths. So I thought - architect. Then I saw (at that point) almost half of my age again in training and had massive second thoughts. Then a mate came back from college with a Neville Brody poster and the decision was made...
As I sit waiting for the 74th set of corrections from a numpty in comms at a huge greedy and corporate client, it's clear to me that I followed the correct path.

my primary school teacher told me his sister-in-law was a graphic designer and drove a porsche. I was very adept at drawing at that age but awful at mathematics. I had no idea what a graphic designer did or what processes were involved until University.
