    • all these countless apple-gates have never impacted me. yet iTunes is still a piece of shit. wish that got the same amount of attention.inteliboy
    • So you should buy a gaming laptop if you really want power, and they probably cost less than the MBPBennn
    • but they're twice as thick (or more), loud, and the battery lasts 1/3 as longmonospaced
    • gaming laptops are always in their own category, and they aren't built to compete with the thin workstations from any companymonospaced

Here's Ars Technica take on the issue (they haven't tested yet the update):

"However, we remain eager to test this ourselves. It's possible that the firmware update will markedly improve performance as Apple has promised but that the MacBook Pro's thermal management system will still not be up to the task of drawing optimal performance from the Core i9 CPU in particular. While the i9-8950HK in the 15-inch model's top configuration has the same Thermal Design Point (TDP) as the i7-8850H one step down, the latter has a configurable TDP down of 35W, and the i9 doesn't. Further, a max turbo frequency of 4.8GHz is aggressive. When Apple first designed this chassis, Intel was likely telling the company that this generation of CPUs would be down to 10nm, but that did not turn out to be the case. The verdict is not in yet.

We're hoping for strong, mostly consistent performance after the firmware update, but we still don't know for sure whether this MacBook Pro design can fully accommodate that CPU. In any case, we'll certainly share our findings later this week."

    https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/…

    • just do the update and then write about it. waste of timedocpoz
    • their concerns are still valid I think, correlates with other comments I've seen about the TDP and the current MBP designernexbcn
    • + the Intel roadmap and not getting yet to 10nmernexbcn
    • I think they could make the pro range bigger. We're not looking for ultra thin laptops, we want work horses that are portable.shapesalad
    • Intel's moores law is out the door and it has bitten Apple in the ass. Shit like this though fuels fire for them to make their own pc cpu's.inteliboy
    • No doubt their own cpus are on the way. They do a damn good job with the A series so far. Metal Architecture for a graphics system too.monospaced
    • ^^ A series ARM chips? Those cannot compete with Intel x86 performance in any way. Maybe i3's, but that's it.section_014
    • @shapesalad I agreeernexbcn
    • no ... just saying that their work on the mobile chips is a sign that their workstation CPUs are very, very likely ... the A series are very impressivemonospaced
    • They've already published a roadmap to use their own CPUs, 2020 I think is when they say they want to switch.zarkonite

So I've dragged a bunch of photos out of Apple's Photos.app to a folder in Finder, as I no longer want to use Photos.app and also want to back these photos up to an external drive.

However, now in finder they all have their created date and modified date set to today, rather than the date the photos were taken. The photos still have the correct date in their EXIF data.

How do I batch automate the re-dating of each photo by their EXIF date?

Ideally I want a finder a simple Automator 'Service' so I can repeat this fix in the future. I've found ExifTool app, but it's looks like I'd need to spend at least 2 hours getting my head around that and the terminal commands etc.

Ideally some AppleScript in an Automator service would do the job. I found a snippet of AppleScript that reads the EXIF of a jpg out, but next I need to strip the string that code returns to extract the date, then change the date of the photo to it.

Anyone know how to do this? Or a better way to do this? I've seen some paid softwares that do this, but to just change the date of a file it seems excessive to have to buy an app for that task.

    • "Ideally I want to find a simple Automator 'Service'......"shapesalad
    • how about moving the originals and not the new created exports? would save you the trouble.uan
    • http://osxdaily.com/…uan
    • ^ seems like that could work, just that each photo is in a folder within a folder within a folder etc.. this going to take some finder wrangling to sort out...shapesalad
    • Maybe find where the Photos.app files folder is. Search it for any .jpg images. In the resulting the search drag them all into on new folder on desktop?Hayzilla
    • BTW when i drag from the app onto desktop it doesn't reset dates for me!Hayzilla

SINGAPORE — Apple is looking into customers' reports of fraudulent purchases made on their iTunes accounts, some up to thousands of dollars. The extent of the problem is unclear, but customers of most major banks here appear to have been hit.

it isn't clear how but if affects people who used their cards or bank accounts on itunes before, even if their account isn't active anymore.

In Google Analytics, there's a Safari classed as 'In App' that doesn't have a specified version number. Does anyone here know what the fuck that means/is?

I'm looking into whether I can deploy CSS Grid on a site, and GA informs me that this particular 'version' represents a few grand in revenue over the last few months :\

    • I think I'm going to push ahead anyway and then go with some table/float-based fallback for older browsers. Just curious to know wtf In-App safari actually IS.detritus
    • when you open a url in the twitter app it opens an instance of safari inside the app...also instagram and others. probably this.uan

"The new MacBook Pro now behaves as expected, but there are still limitations."

    https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/…

"In our post-firmware test, a 3.5GHz clock speed was maintained even when all cores were fully utilized for an extended period of time. This was definitely the performance that Apple promised when announcing the new MacBook Pro lineup, and we're glad to see that the firmware update has made it a reality.

Things get muddier when the GPU is also fully taxed, though. At that point, the CPU is throttled to as low as 2GHz. However, performance is consistent, which is essential for 3D modeling and many other workflows that were hampered by the wild fluctuations we saw before the update."

My 2011 MBP went on the fritz last night. Right in the middle of using it, the screen went grey with light grey vertical stripes.

When I restarted, the Apple logo was purple and so was the loading bar. On numerous tries, it wouldn't fully reload and would either go to a black screen, or a grey screen and I'd have to restart.

I REALLY don't want to have to get a new one, or even a refurb. It already had a graphics card issue fixed for free because of an issue a few years ago, and I've upgraded it so much that a comparable new one will push $2,800.

Probably going to go to the Genius bar and see what's up. At least i've got my iMac and a work laptop so I'm not totally in the lurch.

    • Logic board homey; my wife's (same year) has had it replaced 4 times. They don't even make the logic board anymore, so you have to find one on your own... : (ideaist
    • They won't fix it, its considered Vintage. They don't make parts anymore for it or someshit.ArmandoEstrada
    • a local non-apple shop should have very little issue ordering and swapping the part at a decent pricemonospaced
    • the trick now is to back up the data no matter what happens to the machinemonospaced
    • Yeah, it's been a while since I backed up. I don't use it too much, but some new photos on there that probably aren't backed up to Time Machinemg33
    • these logic boards are tough to find. and if you get one it'll likely die soon enough. I had the exact same issue -- replace Logic board once (under warranty)Gnash
    • and then it died again. It's almost definitely your graphic card againGnash
    • I got around it this time by just bypassing the faulty graphic card (software fix - not hardware).Gnash
    • Your MBP doesn't actually 'need' the GFC to work, but programs that utilize it slow down. on the plus side, it's no longer a brickGnash
    • it's not my main workstation so it's perfectly fine for meetings and remote work when neededGnash
    • looks like the GPU is fried. Some shops still replace that.mekk

Bought the new 2018 MacBook Pro 15'' the other day. Love it. And even like the touchbar now. The base model with 2.2ghz 6-core i7 is plenty too. I don't think the faster ones are that much faster because the machine and your usage doesn't even utilize it fully most of the time. And the base model can turboboost all 6 cores up to 4.1ghz anyway if you have software that can do multi-cores and if extra speed is required.

I was on a 13'' for years. Now a 15'' laptop feels massive. But love the extra screen space.

No throttling issues either nor any problems after the updates/ patch.

Very happy and can only recommend it if you're thinking of buying one.

    • I believe these are rolling out at work in a couple of weeks. I’m a bit apprehensive about the transition.monospaced
    • I have the last MBP that had a mag safe charging cable and regular USB ports. Getting rid of those but adding a touch bar doesn’t seem like an upgrade to me.monospaced
    • I've had a late 2016 MBP for over a year now. Do not miss magsafe at all. Maybe I got a bit more cautious to not trip over the cable...NBQ00
    • ...that said there are some third-party mag-safe adapters for the usb-c if you want it back: https://www.theverge…NBQ00
    • I’ll need one. The MagSafe when it first came out was such a great touch.monospaced

    • ^ "Core i7" 2.8 15" Mid-2014, 16gb ram, GeForce GT 750M, 2gb vram.shapesalad
    • I disagree. Been on that 2014 and can't beat the new 2018 ones. I also agree with Apple about ditching old ports. Most stuff these days over cloud.NBQ00
    • I wonder if they have improved the touchbar since last year's version. I like the new machines overall, but that one aspect seems not ready for prime time.yuekit
    • Like I'll be typing, and it will randomly trigger iTunes to open and other weird shit.yuekit
    • I was concerned about that too. Surprisingly no accidental stuff on the TB so far. Love TouchID but hope a wider implementation on all passwords.NBQ00
    • The keyboard is really nice to type on as well and slightly quieter than my previous late 2016 13'' version.NBQ00
    • I've had the twenty seventeen for over a year. The touchbar sucks. I like to rest my hands at the top of keyboard and I accidentally trigger actions from touchhotroddy
    • the keyboard sucks. my keys get stuck and the letter 't' will make a double enttryhotroddy
    • the magsafe you don't need it. You can charge it from the left or right so tthat is a nice feature.hotroddy
    • I can't can't the number of times the touchbar has been useful in one hand.hotroddy
    • I upgraded, keyboard is so much better... amazing what a minute adjustment can make. Touchbar still useless. My DAW (reason) still runs crap.inteliboy
    • I yet have to try BetterTouchTool to tweak the Touchbar. Not missing any features for now but people say the app is great.NBQ00
    • Just love it. Can throw at it a lot. Running After Effects and 3D apps side by side, rendering and CPU less than 40-50% on all cores.NBQ00

Couldn’t resist and picked up a 2018 MBP today to replace my 2011 MBP who’s logic board is fried. Got the base model 15” with 256gb drive, which would be too small compared to the older one’s 1TB SSD except for the fact that almost everything lives on my iMac with a 2TB drive and 3TB of external drives. Home network is fast so I can access stuff wirelessly easily.

Thinking of doing selective backups with the new Google Drive so various things are always available if I’m not at home.

Barely used it yet but the TouchBar feels surprisingly intuitive; in the store was my first time to even use it.

    • Didn't know what to expect of the TouchBar, but I am quickly loving it. Busy going through old photo folders and tagging pics for deletion.mg33
    • Really easy to just have the color tags visible in the TouchBar and assign them.mg33
    • good to hear. I'm about to do the same, but I'm vacillating between the laptop and the iMac - the $ goes so much further on the desktopGnash
    • I use the dropbox Smart Sync feature. it's pretty great because you can still see the files in your local folder.Gnash
    • It's a good machine. I love mine. And learned to love the TouchBar too. Very useful if you customize it a bit.NBQ00

Wanted to get a new battery for my Mac Book Air from 2011. Had to make an appointment at the Apple Store. Then it turns out "I am much too late" and they don't replace batteries of such an old Mac Book Air anymore. Strange enough, as the current Mac Book Air still has the same resolution (therefore same screen?) and it doesn't make sense for me to buy a new one.

In Germany they speak about sustainability a lot. But, I'll stop the crying, ok, ok...
