My 2011 MBP went on the fritz last night. Right in the middle of using it, the screen went grey with light grey vertical stripes.

When I restarted, the Apple logo was purple and so was the loading bar. On numerous tries, it wouldn't fully reload and would either go to a black screen, or a grey screen and I'd have to restart.

I REALLY don't want to have to get a new one, or even a refurb. It already had a graphics card issue fixed for free because of an issue a few years ago, and I've upgraded it so much that a comparable new one will push $2,800.

Probably going to go to the Genius bar and see what's up. At least i've got my iMac and a work laptop so I'm not totally in the lurch.

    • Logic board homey; my wife's (same year) has had it replaced 4 times. They don't even make the logic board anymore, so you have to find one on your own... : (ideaist
    • They won't fix it, its considered Vintage. They don't make parts anymore for it or someshit.ArmandoEstrada
    • a local non-apple shop should have very little issue ordering and swapping the part at a decent pricemonospaced
    • the trick now is to back up the data no matter what happens to the machinemonospaced
    • Yeah, it's been a while since I backed up. I don't use it too much, but some new photos on there that probably aren't backed up to Time Machinemg33
    • these logic boards are tough to find. and if you get one it'll likely die soon enough. I had the exact same issue -- replace Logic board once (under warranty)Gnash
    • and then it died again. It's almost definitely your graphic card againGnash
    • I got around it this time by just bypassing the faulty graphic card (software fix - not hardware).Gnash
    • Your MBP doesn't actually 'need' the GFC to work, but programs that utilize it slow down. on the plus side, it's no longer a brickGnash
    • it's not my main workstation so it's perfectly fine for meetings and remote work when neededGnash
    • looks like the GPU is fried. Some shops still replace that.mekk
    • ^ welded to the CPU. whole board needs to goGnash
    • ^ total bullcrapmekk
    • I meant the mother board. welded to the mother boardGnash
