Ok my girlfriend wants to upgrade to a pro camera and we found it at B&H and Adorama for 2399 $ and on Ebay for 2'099 $. Buy it online means we could save money and get a nice lens, but i'm still not sure. What do you suggest?

For $400 get a new one. It's worth the piece of mind. I love this camera a lot. I just got this lens, which I highly recommend. http://www.amazon.com/Canon-24-7…

I'd wait and see what happens in the next few weeks 5d-2 is getting old. New model is supposed to be dropping soon. Lots of used 5d-2 will be on the market if you want to go that route, and will save u even more $$$

Stay on top of this site for the next few days:
5dm3 will be announced soon and there will definitely be people getting rid of their 5dm2 but I doubt anyone would ask less than $1900.
I just bought a 5dM2 brand new last month. I absolutely love it. I unfortunately only have a 50mm lens to use it though. That and my friend lends me his 24-105mm L once in a while.
When I upgraded to full frame I had to get rid of two EF-S lenses and I am broke in the camera budget for a little while... :-(
I went out and shot in the rain last week and got my camera and "L" series lens wet, just so I could say I did. It was a good experience.
- hey Hijo, i was looking at picking up at 50mm L.. you rate it? My workhorse atm is the 24-70L, but need faster for video lowlightautoflavour
- i have heard they can search a bit for focus.. would like to know your thoughts..autoflavour
- no man, you don't get it. I have the $100 50mm! hahaHijoDMaite

get a canon c series cam
- ok_not_ok0
- buying a nikon instead of buying a canon is like buying a PC instead of a MACdomacle

Im inline for that baby above! Woohoo! A tad scared at the upgrades in hard drive space, though.
Keep an eye out for the 5D MkIII (I am curious...), but don't hold your breath. That D800 had "quality" rumors (Nikonrumors.com) circulating everywhere, at least 2+ years ago. It was just announced.
That said, suck to buy something only to have a new one come out a few weeks later.
Advice - I'd buy used. There are tons of them online, you'd save a bundle and could find one on Craigslist in perfect shape.
- yea but the 5d mark 3 is rumors to cost $3,700!HijoDMaite
- D800 was supposed to cost 4000, even a week before it came out. It costs 3000formed

I own the 5DII and 7D and a bunch of L lenses. Canon focus sucks my left testicle, and all my Nikon friends with D3's and D700's seem to be happy as pigs in shit.
When the focus is good, 5DII image quality is f'in superb up to ISO 3200
- I even had an employer(wedding photog) say " I'd really like to see what you could do with good equipment".epigraph
- equipment".epigraph
- looking to sell any L's?HijoDMaite
- just got the 24-70, 35L, 50 1.4 and 70-200 2.8. currently. Would love to toss the 24-70 into the trash bin but gotta keep it as a backup =)epigraph
- keep it as a backup.
epigraph - jeez, thats the one I want. what type of shooting do you do?HijoDMaite
- weddings for my livelyhood, everything else for pleasure. You have some nice stuff man. great eye.
epigraph - thanks. i want the 24-70 because all the shooting i do is walk around shooting.HijoDMaite
- I like some portraiture and landscape but I really enjoy just walking aroundHijoDMaite
- FWIW I use he 24-70 as an f/4 lens cause I can never get sharp focus at 2.8. Othe rphotogs I know do the same.
epigraph - dude i heard all "L" lenses work perfect at the extreme aperture. what the heck?HijoDMaite
- That is what I thought honesltly. Just google 24-70L focus problems.epigraph
- I'm shocked to hear your issues with your 5D and 24-70. I have both and the focus is fast and great. I couldn't be happier.CyBrainX
- sounds like you got a dud 24-70.. the one i have is razor sharp down to 2.8.. almost to a faultautoflavour
- Every 24-70L I've ever used worked great, except for the focus. But that's not the glass, it's the body.antagonista

- This was my reason for investing more into Nikon, why haven't they fixed it by now?antagonista

I wonder why you guys say focus sucks? do you mean the speed of the focus or the amount of focus points?
do you guys shoot in Auto Focus or do you manually pick your focus points?
- < answer him please! :D would like to know too.pango
- the only focus point that works consistently is the center. The only cross type one. focus and recompose for EVERY shot leads to focus errors.epigraph
- means focus errors. My 40d had all cross type sensors. Never a missed focus.epigraph
- Both, the number of points and the speed. You have to center focus often and recompose.antagonista
- HijoDMaite0
when i strictly use the center focus point it creates a small section of sharpness. especially in wide open apertures. this is something i am struggling with right now.
in this photo (24-105mm f/4) both eyes are in focus, but if i bust out my 50mm f/1.8, then any sudden angle in the girls face causes one eye to go out of focus.
- at this distance with a 50mm f/2.8 gives you mere centimeters of acceptable focus.epigraph
- this is a great pic btw
epigraph - thanksHijoDMaite
- i do find 50 1.8 has some focus issue. it's focus is spot on if you do weight up frame but anything further i find it not as accurate.pango
- accuratepango
- that just shallow depth of field. Bump the aperture on the 50mm 1.8 up to 2.8 / 4 and you'll get both eyes in focus.Hombre_Lobo
- Cool pic mate!Hombre_Lobo
- epigraph0
hey Hijo that is just the depth of field of a full frame at work. I learned on a 40D and shot at 2.8 for everything with good results. On full frame f/4 is f/2.8 crop sensor.
- so backing up a bit and cropping later for close-up would work better?HijoDMaite
- no, shooting at slower f stop is the solution. What body are you using?epigraph

yeah just do your google homework, but the only sensor woth a damn on te 5dII is the center. The outer AF points suck.

Here is a good thread about the 5D Mark II AF issues.
- maikel0
On the original topic, I bought a 5D Mark II (new) on ebay, and didn't have much problems. The focusing screen was loose so we sent it back and they re-shipped another.
As your pay is paypal-protected, the sellers won't try to scam you or anything dodgy.

I used to shoot Canon 5D mark II, switched to Nikon due to the focus issues... and my ecosystem of friends all shooting nikon, so I could borrow lenses, backup bodies,etc...
for my bread and butter, I shoot mostly weddings and corporate events / conventions..... the AF for the Canon 5D II was as odd as was said above, the central focus point worked, the others were dodgy... I missed a number of images doing the focus recompose dance. It wasn't evil, but just a bit frustrating.... Strangely, I used to shot with a 5 D mark I, and it's AF seemed to be better than the 5D mark II, but maybe I was spoiled by borrowing a 50D, whose AF was far better than the 5D....
Also note that the 70-200 F2.8 USM-IS canon lens, while amazing, was likely to backfocus OR frontfocus on the 5D mark II I was using if I shot it at F2.8 at 10 feet, my preferred way of working for those amazing people photos.... argh! I calibrated it, but it seemed to be more unpredictable than I'd like.... of course, if I shot F5.6, it was fine, but that's not why you get that lens!
Sometimes, I'd shoot 3 shots in a row, 10 feet af F2.8, the second or last one was often perfect focus, the other two slightly off....
If I'm shooting in a controlled set, like an ad shoot, a Canon 5D mark II has great AF, kind of like the Hassleblad HD40, and... uh... kind of like a 90's old-school EOS-1 or Nikon F4, i.e. one AF point in the middle works great....that's ok when you can direct everything and ask people to do stuff over and over till the image looks great on the tethered monitor.... but in my experience, not so great for weddings and conferences....

I'm selling mine when de Mark III hits the market...
