^ holy shit had no idea it was that guy.
His websites were mental and went on about how rich he was and how much of a hacker he was, they all looked like some kid trying to make a 2Advanced style site at the time
- yeah!..exactly!...th... what made them so awesome! ;)exador1

Some of the commenter on Reddit made a good point - what's the difference between Megaupload and YouTube? Both have massive amounts of copyrighted content, but they both remove them when notified, which is all that the law requires.
Plus Megaupload has been in operation for years anyway, why are they only acting now?
- they need to set an example for sopa/pipa, even though the case ia in NZgeorgesIII
- because there is a high degree of ripped full movies and music, you tube does not have thatGminor
- it is a quantity thing arguablyGminor
- There is tons of copyrighted music on YouTube. So no real difference.ukit2
- and they are explicitly aiding copyright infringement rather than a video sharing serviceGminor
- you can't download full albums from youtubeGminor
- full quality flac straight from a disc ... oh i got it from youtube... can't happenGminor
- Sure but there is nothing in the law that makes that distinctionukit2
- the explicitly aiding copyright infringement part is definitely in the law. youtube provides a video service not a file sharing one.Gminor
- can't download any full length movies straight from youtube like megavideo and meguploadGminor
- whats tricky about the situation to me is not if what they are doing is illegal its that the gov can just shut it down with no due processGminor
- ...process. and i'm not saying they are doing something illegal its open to debateGminor
- It's all in the eye of the beholder. Believe me music and movie industry would argue that YouTube is facilitating copyright infringement - and they have, in court.ukit2
- and they have made that argument in court. They view streaming as just as bad as downloading, and they are both crimes.ukit2
- illegal under copyright laws. The reason YouTube (and prior to today, Megaupload) are able to exist is because they remove copyrighted content when requested.ukit2
- copyrighted content when requested. It's called "safe harbor" provision of the DMCA.ukit2
- i think its the role in distribution part thats the real issueGminor
- you could also stream on Megaupload using their Megavideo site.ernexbcn

"UMG knows that we are going to compete with them via our own music venture called Megabox.com, a site that will soon allow artists to sell their creations direct to consumers and allowing artists to keep 90% of earnings."

Basically just a story of a fat dodgey dude with a chequered past who stepped over the line one too many times.
I don't condone the shutting down of file sharing sites and believe in content sharing wholeheartedly. The methods he went about it, however, weren't for this community aspect and the sharing of content and knowledge, it was to stroke his ego by "sticking it to the man" and ultimately benefitting his back pocket.

I don't understand what Megaupload could've done to prevent this. They swiftly remove violating content, which will inevitably appear due to their business model. They do not condone piracy, and comply with DMCAs.
How does this differ from youtube? Mediafire? Or any website which unwittingly hosts copyrighted content?
That the staff have been indicted is sickening.
There's no point protesting SOPA. The USA is a rogue government and will do what they want regardless of a bill passing. The time to protest SOPA and PIPA is over, the time to protest the USA Government itself has begun.
http://www.reddit.com/r/technolo…- it is arguably much different legally. but taking down companies with no real legal process is bad .Gminor
- to youtube that is... mediafire i don't know they are just not getting the attentionGminor
- mediafire is also a personal file host to, not a public share all with profit sharingGminor
