What Continuity said. I'm currently sat at an awesome desk made by a local craftsman. Looks good, sturdy as a mastodon femur.

Also consider a local craftsman/carpenter. Find a design you like, find a craftsman you trust, and talk with them about what can be done, for things like desks, tables and chairs.
You'd end up with bespoke stuff that would strike a better balance between quality and price, especially if you get more than one or two pieces done.
- It's win-win: you end up with good quality stuff you like and will have for ages, and you help the local economy.Continuity

- Ask them to make 'W' wine rack while you're at it, someone wanted one on here once :Dgoldieboy

Sometimes great "mid-century" stuff turns up at estate auctions... do some checking around.... also a bit of paint can make a filing cabinet interesting....
NOTE: I once did overhear a client say something like "we should be paying for graphic design, not for some design firm's interior design.. ugh, look at this!".. while pointing to a weird light fixture....
- NEVER PAINT WOOD (that isn't already painted)idiots

$3,800 for a office chair? $760 for a plywood fucking coffee table? C'mon now. That's just stupid.

I find it funny that people clamor over these new modern designs with their extravagant price tags, when you could spend the same money or less at an auction or antique store purchasing a desk with more character than the rest of the office with beautiful ornamentation, plenty of storage, and probably already nearing 100 years old. but you guys rock on with your fake butcher blocks attached aluminum pole legs.
- Personal preference. I dig the clean modern look of that stuff. Not really into ornamentation. I leave that to old folks.fyoucher1
- I also don't think I've ever walked into an antique store or even heard of furniture auctions :)fyoucher1
- For my home, I dig that kind of stuff though (think Restoration Hardware). But for office I dig the clean modern look.fyoucher1
- nothing personal, the trend lately just seems to make it look like ikea but cost more than a caridiots
- as you age, you will learn to appreciate those details as they were hand done. not stamped by a machineidiots
- I'm def not into ornamented antique stuff, but if I could find some good art deco pieces, I'd be all over them.Continuity
- I'm plenty aged already (family man) and still don't like ornate stuff. Just not my style. Good handmade stuff is a different story though.fyoucher1

Has a ton of stuff. Designer brands...not the cheap stuff...but not stupid expensive either. I think $1k - $2k for a good desk isn't a bad deal, especially when it'll last a loooong time. I like Steelcase and Herman Miller personally. Well worth every penny.

One place I worked just got 2 sawhorses, a wooden door, a piece of plywood sized to match the door, and a piece of glass sized to match.
cheap and flexible and designer-esque....
Then they placed a TON of photos and ads and design idea stuff under the glass, on top of the plywood.... it looked brilliant.... and was cheap... they changed images every so often too.... so in a way, they could customize it for a pitch....
- nice idea alright.nephronim
- i have a couple those (minus the glass) as a desk in my study and a worktop in my garage.sine
- you can get trestles and tops in different finishes (or paint them yourself if you want)sine
- IKEA used to sell 1/2" glass tops you could buy by themselves to put atop whatever table you built on your ownidiots
- ooh. why did Ikea stop selling that glass?vaxorcist

nice suggestions. It's a surprise to me how expensive a plain table can be...I know there is alot of longevity in a good table but 4-5000 for a table strikes me as a tad high...
- A BMW 3 sedan is a terrific car worth every penny. So is an Aston Martin DB9.randommail
- they are not a treated piece of wood.nephronim
- a DB9 is not worth every penny, those with affluence have shown they are willing to pay its priceidiots
- a hyundai is worth every penny, a DB9 is a rear wheel drive overpowered death trapidiots
- rear wheel drive death trap? I'd rather have a 94 Z28 camaro in that case $3000 or so!vaxorcist

Always been a fan of those thick, rough-hewn looking tables without any staining or varnishing used as desks. You could have a look at the furniture shops just past the Albert Heijn on Museumplein, around PC Hooftstraat. They're a touch pricey (compared to, say, Ikea), but you do get quality in return.
- the huge ones that look like butcher blocks?idiots
- Yeah, and sometimes their surfaces are a touch uneven.Continuity
