Auto Update Smart Objects?

Just starting to work with Smart Objects to keep our designs more modular and I am wondering if there is a way to set up photoshop to load in the smart object files each time the master file is opened.

In other words, I have placed a few smart objects into a PSD and I want to replace each with the latest version of itself (header.psd, footer.psd) when I open the file (about-us.psd).

Anyone know the right way to get this done?

    Thanks,
    TR

I've never been able to get Smart Objects to work that way. It seems like, whenever you import a smart object into a PSD, it creates a new instance of the object's original doc, instead of keeping a reference to it. So if you update the original, you'd need to re-import that as a new smart object. Every time.

Everything I have found/heard looks to indicate that this isn't possible...

Does anyone have a suggestion for how to achieve the same efficiency with a different method?

    Thanks,

Using InDesign would solve this problem. Ideal? Not really, especially for non-print designers. But being mainly interactive guy for the better half of a decade, InDesign has increasingly become more useful.

As stated above, smart objects in PS only reopen as a .psb file (temp file), so that does you no good. Just as a quick idea (typing on my phone with no laptop to check it out) can you do save out the smart object as a separate psd file. Then do a - file >place > your smart object psd file you just saved out? Not sure if this will prompt you each time you open the original psd file to reload updated placed documents like it does in InDesign. Worth a shot? Good luck.
