Asking Age At Work

I don't think it's 'illegal' to ask the age, but it's perfectly reasonable for you to say you wish not to disclose it.
If you wanted to skirt around it you could say you're in your "20s/30s/40s" to be vague about it.
I don't think it's illegal to ask why someone is out sick either. In a similar vain to the above, it can be asked but cannot be pursued in any other discourse. Doctor's certificates are only required for 2+ days off work (as far as I'm aware)
[...the above is UK specific, and not 100% sure of]

You tell the temp it's none of his business (if you don't want to tell him), but I highly doubt it's illegal for him to ask once he's employed.
As for asking why someone is out sick, I would think 'is out sick' rather does what it says on the tin. Asking further would be tasteless gossip, though unlikely to be illegal.

He's a young little shit, and told me his age is 23.
- 23 year olds are obsessed with people's ages, it's a hangover from being at school and being oh-so different from other 'years'mikotondria3

I have run into this problem as well. To get around the law, people will often ask what year I graduated from college (I have omitted that from my resume). I dread the age questioning..........

how old are you?

I do not believe you are allowed to ask age when interviewing a potential employee... however, years ago, I interviewed at Etnies corporate headquarters (Sole Technology) everything went well. Come to find out I did not get the job because... dun dun dun (dramatic noise).... I was married and had kids... the art director told me that flat out and said "You wouldn't be able to work the hours we would want you to".
Come to find out, about a year later, that this is very illegal and grounds for a hefty lawsuit... well I am not that kind of guy and would rather not work at a place that family is not important.

joke around it. tell them you're at least 100. i stop counted at that point.
- akrok0
or say. between 18 and 81. next question.
- CALLES0
you are arguing with a 23 year old... bwhahahaha
- akrok0
still, they are not suppose to ask that. so, you really don't need to give them a honest answer.
this has nothing to do with being sensitive. i had one asshole who keep asking me that shit. i told him, you're not suppose to ask me that. he said, really? no, tell me.
oh, and he was older then me. well he looked. i don't know. i didn't ask him.

"heard it's illegal to ask someone's age when you're interviewing someone"
It's illegal to discriminate by age when hiring, so no one asks ages during interviews [in the USA]. I don't think it's illegal to ask someones age in an interview, just poor form.
It is not illegal for a co-worker to ask you your age.
Assign this perswon a horrible task and they will avoid you.

A couple of days ago he asked my age, and if I was married. I said it was too personal. Today, I get a video link from my gf, and he asked if it was sent from my wife?
I told him asking someone's age is illegal in a interview, and he said that he's not in a interview. I told him that it's a risky conversation. I'm wondering how I can legally tell him to fuck off.- It's illegal to tell someone to fuck off?Continuity
- Poor form, keepin it professional :)pinkfloyd
- if he keeps chatting you up tell him you need to concentrate on work and he should too

In the US it is illegal to ask for your birth date before you are hired.
In the UK and other parts of western EU, it is acceptable (perhaps the folks across the pond can weigh in on that.) That's why you'll often see somebody's birth date on their C.V. in the EU.
Beyond the standard HR paperwork, there isn't any reason anyone else you work with must know your birth date.- it's not illegal in the sense that it's criminal thoughmonospaced

This is really funny to me (not) because in Brazil you have to put your age in your CV, and if you don't that's probably will be the first question of the interview.
And it's quite a common practice to fire old people, yep, 3rd world problem.- good gawd. If Brasil is 3rd world, I don't wanna live in the 1st.threadpost
- But Brazil is 3rd world, actually if you go to the North, unfortunately it is 5th world :(chrisRG
- north, like Fortaleza? I thought that place was very nice. Idk much about ParĂ¥ or Amazonas tho. Brasil is tops in my book.threadpost
- But you're only seeing the tourist part, aren't you? More than 50% of the North ppl doesn't have Sewage treatment and illiterate rate are really highchrisRG
- I wont even mention the highly illiterate rates. Sao Paulo, Rio and mot big cities are ok, but the rest is ver poor ;(chrisRG
- You're correct. I only have a tourist visa. Tho I have several Brasilian friends and have "traveled" a bit beyond Corcovado.threadpost
- ...beyond Corcovado. I'm sure there are serious poverty/health/educa... probs. Only that I like what I saw or heard.threadpost
- I know... I feel so bad about that, it's such a good place, I just wish it would be safer and had a smaller social gap.chrisRG
- Brasil is the 50 yr world future. No: U.S, China,India,Russia,E... They're economic independent and gross xportersthreadpost
- Perhaps rather than carrying on w/ conversation in a post-it note, we should start a thread? chrisRG = GO! I'm a lazy gringo.threadpost

Maybe he was just making conversation and didn't mean it to be offensive, either way you could just say you'd rather not say than get some legal jargon to throw down at him.
If I asked someone their age and they replied with "it's illegal to ask my age in an interview", I'd think you were a dumbass and never speak to you again, so maybe it works?

OK, look, are you actually managing this temp? Are you his direct report? If so, I think it's perfectly within your right to say, 'Listen, here's the arrangement: you come in, do the tasks we assign to the best of your abilities, you go home at the end of the day and we evaluate you on that basis. My personal life is none of your business, and is not subject to discussion. Do we understand each other?'
- Someone else is managing this guy, i'm checking with him if I can tell him to get me coffeepinkfloyd
- Then in that case, you let him know in uncertain terms that you will provide feedback on his performance to his manager.Continuity
- in no uncertain terms, ratherContinuity
- Apparently asking him to get my coffee would be poor form...oh wellpinkfloyd
- Probably just as well. He'd likely piss in it anyway.Continuity
