Be cool, be loyal. 2 weeks aint nothing.

The new guy can wait.
- team_zissou0
Trust me, the new guy probably has other options, it's not like your the onlyperson out there.
- team_zissou0
So just be honest, do the work if you can do it if not, let the new person know you cannot do it or whatever.

sent him an email.. the jist of it was.
" I'd love to join your team, but I have to fulfill my duties here to their completion, if you can show some flexibility with the start date, I would be excited at the new opportunity.
But I cant leave a mess behind me on a days notice. Let me know if you can show some understanding on the matter, if not best of luck with the recruitment and thanks kindly for the offer."We'll see I guess. It just sucks cause its more money, and its so close to home. FuuuuuuUUuuuu...
- boy, i hope you're paraphrasing.
"show me some understanding, yo. If not BEST OF LUCK SUCKER!"SteveJobs - i wouldn't even mention recruiting someone else, just leave them with 'please understand' and wait for the response. Also don't call your job a mess, its your duty to fulfillDodecahedron
- I also wouldn't call it a mess you're leaving behind, just important duties to attend to ...Dodecahedron
- oh wait you already sent it... good enoughDodecahedron
- boy, i hope you're paraphrasing.

Without even reading through this thread, I have to imagine almost everyone agrees that it's a total dickmove for any professional agency—boutique or otherwise—to ask that you forego your obligatory 2-week notice to start "tomorrow." I would ask if they meant literally tomorrow, or figuratively "We need you ASAP." Then if it's the latter, try to have an adult conversation with your current boss about it and lay out the situation.

The guy called me back after I sent him the email. He said he respects my position and is willing to wait a week for me to fulfill my responsibilities here.
Maybe he was testing my character? I think I'm gonna take the gig.
Thanks for the input gents/ladies(?)
- should I say 2 weeks or GTFO.... ?Al_dizzle
- yep you should

we only have to go off of what you tell us, but this prospective employer sounds like one of those miserable people that'd make you come in on the weekend. you don't even work for him and he's trying to get you to make a universally accepted bad career move.
if the job is worth it, go talk to your current employer and explain the situation. You're in a good position here IF you're not impulsive and handle it professionally.
