Situation: I've been at the same studio for about 4 years now (longest Ive ever been with anyone). But over the last half year I've been actively searching for an exit. I just got a call from an interview I took last week, and they are offering me the position.
The problem: I just started a new project here, and it'll take me a couple of weeks to finish it, Im also the only web guy in this little shop so nobody else can pick up the pieces if I leave, and I also have a lot of other accounts that I need to take care of before I jet.
I told the perspective employer that I would need a couple of weeks to tie up all my loose ends here before I could start with them. But he responded saying that he needs me TOMORROW, and has to know my decision end of day.My current employer has never done wrong by me, and has always been understanding and flexible, but its just come time for me to leave. Is this new employer being unreasonable by not giving me time to leave properly? The new company is a bike ride from my house, and I'd love to take the job but I'm not a fan of them putting me in this ultimatum position.

what kind of employer says fuck the two weeks and tells you to start the next day?!? you sure this new place is legit? this could be a red flag for sure.

I think it shows a fundamental disrespect on the part of the potential new employer to demand that you do not even provide the typical 2 weeks notice to your current employer. I am sure they would be pissed as hell if roles were reversed. Sounds already like an indicator of what working with them might be like. Lack of respect and unrealistic demands.

sounds like a tough position. I for one wouldn't fuck an employer over like that (unless they deserved it), nor would I want to work for a company/boss who thinks so little of loyalty.
Best situation you could hope for is your current employer understands and allows you to contract out while you transition over. I wouldn't be happy, but if it's a great move for you I'd be happy you were moving on to better things.
Be honest with your current employer. And for God's sake, have the nuts to tell your possible new boss that you would have appreciated more time to give your old firm. Being a pussy this early on sets the tone for a not so happy relationship later...

Take the new gig and work out a reasonable freelance rate to finish up the existing projects. You may be able to work out a nice raise from old boss and stay.

New employer is just wrong. How would he like the shoe on the other foot? Sounds like an idiot with an inflated sense of self importance. If you take his job your work / life balance will suffer!

I had almost the exact same thing happen to me last year. My new employer said they needed me immediately and I had to quit a freelance project 2 days into it. I hated burning the bridge but needed the benefits a stability of the full time job.
Then I get to the new place and they didn't have anything for me to do for 2 weeks.
